Since I've been getting advice from you guys, you can see the progression. These are knives one through five, built in order.
Top one I built in high school, 12 years ago.
Next one is a sawzall blade, mostly done for pinned handle practice.
Third one is a trap spring, forged flat, annealed, ground, then quenched in oil and tempered in the oven. It has mesquite handles and nail pins.
Fourth one is a trap spring, trap baseplate for the guard, trap ring on the pommel. This was my first hidden tang, first guard, and the subject of my post about antler finishing. I don't really like proportions with the large handle, but I built it for a friend with big hands.
Bottom one is a file, finished with birdseye maple scavenged from a gym floor. This one is my first with a plunge cut, and the first with filework.

Working on three more right now!

Looking good. I always love seeing folk's startup and progress blades. It gives me hope for mine. Can't wait to see the three you're working on now.

:DThey are all looking good. My first knife I was all proud of and showed it too a friend who I had overheard talking about knives a few days before that. He takes a look at it and said that looks like a user! Well I thought that was a compliment and I guess it was. I found out later that day from another fellow on the job that he was a Master Bladesmith.
The next day he brings in a few random samples of his knives and a book full of pictures of some he had made. They were awsome to say the least!
I made the statemnt that his knives made mine look like crap!:grumpy: But he told me my knife was made for use and most folks would buy his knives more for colllection pieces instead of use.
From that time on I have always tried to keep that idea in mind when building knives. I want the quality of my knives to be as good as possible, the looks make you want to posses it, but to me the ulitmate compliment is when some one picks up one of my knives and uses it frequently becasue it's there favorite knife!!!!!!!
