Hey guys just wanted to share a recent blade I completed. This one was a gift, made to be inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven"

The size is 10 inches overall length, and as for the style, I'm interested to see what style people would consider it to be.

The steel is SK5 (JIS) which is known as W108 in the AISI spec. Bolsters are made from D2

The handle is made from a wood called Satorn which is I've been told is similar to Wenge. Considering this is the Raven knife, I would have liked to go all black, but my friend really wanted the natural wood showing.

For the sheath, I sketched it up and then transferred to my computer to do the laser cutting. It's 5 separate pieces of dyed buffalo leather, has a nice thick feel to it.

There's a slight Hamon going on, but just a bit. I've recently upgraded my Hamon clay and am happy for that, though I was still able to get a bit to show with this blade using castable refractory.

Any and all feedback or questions are welcome and appreciated!

I didn't put your BF identity together with your IG until now

Hey Kuraki yea I recently changed my name nickandersonart to the condensed version NANDA, I also do glass work and some design work and kind of wanted to make nanda my main thing that all of my work falls under. Perhaps I should put that in my BF moniker if possible...

Very cool. And even though I can't quite put my finger on why, it IS raveny. It invokes the feel of the poem perfectly. Call me weird but I even like that the pins are so visible on the bolsters. And that sheath, holy wow! Not sure what style one would call it, but genre wise I'd call it usable fantasy. Awesome piece of work regardless of nomenclature.

Thanks for the kind words Perrin! I like it, usable fantasy [emoji1]

I was also happy with how the pins showed, somehow the D2 appears brighter than the stainless pins which gives a bit of difference in color and I think the slight difference can be appealing. Has to work with the design, of course. I've even considered using brass pins in stainless bolsters before but haven't yet tried. When it's the right look for the right blade I'll give it a go!

Also valknut and currenthill thanks guys! Valknut you'll get it for sure. Send me a message anytime if you wanna chat about techniques I'm happy to help

I love the design of this knife... great lines and flow. my only critique is there are a number of glue gaps that could be tightened up fairly easily that will really make your knives look even better. keep up the good work

I think it looks really great. the sheath compliments the knife as well. Total package kind of deal. The only critique is the bolster/ tang gaps and the pin gaps. I think i would be fine with the pins showing, but the smiley faces could be gone.

I agree with the critiques posted, also I don't mind sanding lines when they represent one direction of sanding, but seeing lines perpendicular on the same surface then with a little polish over that appears unfinished to me. Great profile and execution. I especially like the sheath! Nice work.

Hey guys thanks for the feedback and all very valid critiques! To be honest I'm not sure how the glue gaps showed up as I clamped the bolsters while epoxying, but in the future I may clamp with some sort of buffer on top of each of the bolster sides to even out the pressure of the clamps so that the pins don't interfere as much and to prevent any shifting. (If anyone has better suggestions on how best to do that part I'm interested)
