Some praise for the Rambler

This thread has me considering a Rambler now for my tv table knife. Right now that role is assumed by a total piece of junk Chinese OTF that can’t even open an envelope easily, and a SAK knock-off from my pool supply place (one step down from a gas station special, I think) that looks kinda cool but doesn’t cut worth a crap. Forget that I have a half dozen other perfectly capable SAKs up in the knife drawer - this feels like as good an excuse as any to add one more to the collection.

Why in the name of all the Swiss Mountain Gods, do you bother with Chinese junk?

I agree with Sawl, toss them in the garbage can and leave a SAK out that fills your needs of a coffee table knife.

Just had to try it. It was so CHEAP I figured I couldn’t go wrong even if it turned out to be useless (which it is). And I’m not paying $280 for something decent just so I can fidget with it. Unfortunately there isn’t a whole lot in between.

Anyway, like I edited, I just ordered a Cadet for TV table duty. :D

I just bought a good condition rambler cheap on Ebay.
I've got a potential modification in mind that I may or may not go through with, but I still wanted to check one out.

The idea is to have a package opener instead of the blade, but I'm not sure I can get ahold of one or make one out of the blade.

Maybe some modder has a package opener laying around ?

Sounds interesting--keep us posted if you go ahead with it!

Yeah, one got thrown back in the drawer after about a half hour of sharpening yielded … nothing. The other is a small and cheap (I mean CHEAP) Chinese OTF that I think I could put a better edge on a tin can lid. In fact I think a lid comes right off the can sharper than this garbage. But it’s great for fidgeting, so it got a stay of execution. The tiny little Rambler is here in its tiny little pouch now, ready to do whatever work I need it to do. I wish Vic made a mid-size with just those exact same tools - it would be perfect. I wonder if @Spikediesel could conjure up such a creature…

Edit: Oh how I love this place. Just when I though I had run out of reasons to need another knife, I pop into this forum. I just ordered a black Alox Cadet for the tv table. It and the Rambler should be able to handle any emergencies that come up on my couch.
Enjoy your Rambler! It really is a fantastic knife. I lost mine, panicked, & bought two more. A Classic doesn't do it on my keyring because its blade opens at the "wrong" end, opposite to the scissors & my keys, which makes for awkward handling. BTW I found my original Rambler shortly after my replacement purchases.

PS I caved finally & ordered a Cadet last week; will see how it goes as I've always felt it'd feel too thin in my hand.

If 91mm is mid-size enough, I’ve been working on getting the 58mm combo tool to work on the back…in-line unlike other mods I’ve seen for 84mm and 91mm

I used a modern spring modified, but an older LNF should be able to be made to work too.

With a nail file from an 84mm in a blade layer, it’d be the same toolset plus a CS or #2 Phillips.

That’s cool! Will love to see how it turns out.

I liked the carabiner clip on your rambler so much i had to find me some. Thankfully i found some at my local Walmart. They work great and cuts down on some of the bulk on my keys.
Back when I still shopped at walmart I picked up a 5-pack of those little spring clip aluminum mini carabiners similar to the ones you're talking about.

They all quickly fell apart. Every single one. Be careful what you're buying at wally world. It's cheap for a reason. It's usually made with poor standards under awful conditions for slave wages.

Walmart uses its ubiquity to aggressively bully companies to get their costs lower, and this effectively pushes down the quality of products over time. It also results in the creation and perpetuation of exploitation. If I had to make a list of the most evil corporate entities in the world, walmart would definitely be somewhere in the top 10.

Check out the little clips from Countycomm, they have some tiny little ones in SS.
They're sturdy little things, but a little higher priced than a 3 pack should be.

I just got the Ebay rambler in and I like it, though I will admit that there wasn't much anticipation in receiving it because it's exactly what I expected it to be.
It pairs very well with the Sebertool m2.

Btw it came in pretty decent condition, the toothpick wasn't even used and I assume the previous owner just put it on their keys and never used it.

You are right about walmart. We are limited here in small town oklahoma. I usually support my local ace or or we have a farm and ranch store like tractor supply i support as well. I was using the smaller dog collar like clips from ace to attach things to my keys but they haven't been lasting very long. They are cheap china junk too.

Instead of 91mm cellidor, I was re-thinking this in 84mm…Alox. No need to convert the 84mm file…just no scale tools. Hopefully I have some spare time tomorrow and can find the dismantled Cadets or find a Sportsman to take apart.

They are called Nite Eze S-Niners.
S-biners? Those are great. Especially in the smaller sizes, IMO.

I picked up some small Nite-eze carabiner clips at Home Depot. They make great ways to clip a small SAK to a keyring for quick removal to use as a detached tool. They are called Nite Eze S-Niners. They have small and very small.
Also a big fan..

Dammed auto correct!

Found the exploded Cadet stash and some bonus scissor options.

Test fit of blade layer:

Unfortunately, while the bottle opener can be made to work like this it’s a bit awkward and inconvenient for anyone who uses that often. Good news is that it takes very little to make these parts work together for anyone who would want the Rambler equivalent tools in 84mm.
