Some problems with my Delica

Well, I've had my Delica for 5 days now. I opened it up on day 3 to clean it out after going to the beach (:o), and then again today to put some oil around the pivot.

Now I've noticed a few things:

1a. The pivot torx screw sticks kind of far out from the handle.
1b. If I tighten it any more to get it further toward the handle, it's going to be way too tight
1c. If I don't tighten it, there's going to be some side-side blade play
1d. If I don't tighten it, the blade doesn't "suck" itself into the handle when closing it

2. I F-ed up a torx screw, the one that holds the back lock, to be exact. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get it out... Any advice?

Thanks.

I had one recently that was torqued down way too tight at the factory and I ended stripping it so I had to drill it out. Fortunately I had a spare.

your #1 problem happened to me, so I returned mine. sorry, thats all I can say.

I guess I'll have to do that and buy a Delica spare parts kit...

It wasn't like this before, though. Guess I'll have to open it up and try again...

I don't know if this will really be any help since I'm just guessing, but I'll throw out a couple of ideas. . . On #1, maybe there's a bit of sand or dirt or something inside the barrel part of the fastener, or maybe the flat portion of the fastener isn't aligned properly with the flat part of the hole? Either way, hopefully it will correct itself if you disassemble and reassemble it. On #2, I'd try a screw extractor. . .

I'm not sure if the smallest one in this set is small enough to work for you though.

Once you get everything back in working order I'd suggest avoiding taking the knife apart unless it's really necessary. If you're a tinkerer by nature like me it may be hard to resist, but really you can do pretty much all the routine cleaning and maintenance and lubrication that you need to do on the Delica without taking it apart. I've had my D4W for almost a year now and I've only taken it apart twice. . . Once not log after I got it, just to see what it was like (like I said, I'm an incurable tinkerer) and a second time shortly after the first to try a better way of reassembling it that I read about. I've managed to leave it alone since then except to adjust the pivot a couple of times.

Hmmm well after reading this I pulled my Delica out of my pocket to take a look. Yes on my the pivot screw is not flush with the handle yet I would not consider it to be sticking out.

Yeah, I guess it's not as bad as I thought it was. My only problem now is the F-ed up torx screw :(

Any advice on how to get it out? Should I just destroy it with a drill or something and get a new one in a kit?

Put it in the freezer for a few hours and see if you can get it out with conventional tools.

Sometimes helps.

just drill it out and contact spyderco for another. or a few if your prone to lose things like that. I've read that they have sent out replacement parts for free, but not always. worth a shot.

All my E4/D4 blade pivots stick out to some degree. It is a balancing act of adjusting the lockbar and blade pivot screws to get the tension you want. By the way how do you drill out the screw without reaming out the threads in the D bolt? My D4 came from the factory with one of the spacer screws buggered up and I was able to remove it with the next size larger torx driver but it was not screwed down too tight.

Did you look at the delica lego by the spyderco collector. There are a few things that can go wrong when re-assembling. I almost broke my back spacer. Here is the link http://www.spydercollector.nl/index1.php?pagina=news&id=166&ex=none#article

Yeah, I've read about that nipple on the back spacer. I had no problem with it; an easier method than the one in that link for reassembly is to finish everything in the knife except the lock bar. Slide the lock bar in, push in the D Bolts, then get everything nice and tight.

I plan to destroy both, actually, and just get new ones.

A left hand drill bit will probaly get the screw out. Some extractor kits have these LH bits. Some brands of torx drivers will be sized slightly differently. So if there are any teeth left in the hole it might still come out with a different driver of the same size or the next larger size.

I ordered the replacement parts kit and finally did the dirty work today.

Problems 1a-1d have disappeared. Now locking action + opening/closing is better than I ever remember it being. The pivot is tight, the blade still sucks itself in during closing, there is no play, the pivot screw doesn't stick out - I couldn't be happier!

As for the problem with the stripped torx screw - I got that biotch out with a drill. Boy, was that satisfying getting it out.

I'm so sorry for putting you through all that, Delica. I'll never ever ever ever take you apart again :D

PS: Note to self: the torx screws should be put in so that the heads show on the BACK side of the knife...
