Here's what happened: A friend of mine recently traded a 'War Talon' with someone else. After recording the shipping video and confirming there were no issues, my friend sent out the knife. However, after receiving it, the buyer tried to negotiate a lower price, claiming that the 'butt' of the knife showed 'signs of use' — as shown in the picture below:

After that, my friend took a look at one of his own knives, a Triceratops (which was ordered directly from the Busse factory in brand-new condition, just like the War Talon). Upon receiving it, he noticed the same honeycomb-like, or pepper-like, surface texture. Then he found that other people's knives he saw online seemed to have the same issue, and it only appears on stonewashed surfaces. Is this a common flaw?

Besides the above issue, I have to vent about one more thing—I'm from China. In fact, in China, knives like Busse and folding knives are classified as 'regulated knives,' meaning they are prohibited from being carried in public and can only be used at home or in the wilderness. Under such difficult circumstances, having to deal with this kind of thing is really frustrating. In fact, within the Chinese knife community, we call such people 'microscope enthusiasts.' They are especially common in the folding knife community. Scratches that wouldn't bother users of fixed knives or people who actually put their knives to use become reasons for them to haggle over the price. This has happened to me several times recently as well. WTF😡. Have any of you encountered this, or is this just our 'special trait'?

Microscope Enthusiasts - LOL I really like that and can relate completely. When knives are mass produced the manufacturing process is not perfect and I understand that. A small unfinished area like these does not bother me. Especially a knife that is meant to be used with a stonewash finish. If I paid extra for a polished finish or If I paid $1500.00 for a hand made folder from a known maker and it arrived with unfinished areas like these then I would not be satisfied.

Haha, yeah. Those of us who actually use knives regularly in daily life really couldn't care less. So are you implying that this kind of mark is pretty common on stonewashed finishes?

No I am saying that sometimes unfinished areas just happen and are not a big deal on a knife that is meant to be used.

These marks are perfectly normal, I've seen it a number of times on my knives received directly from Busse.

The Busse website specifically states "The competition and stonewashed finish may show light machining marks."

Your friend didn't fail to disclose anything IMO, it was the buyer who wasn't aware of what he was buying else he'd have know this type of finish irregularity is common on Busses that are stonewashed or Comp finished and that it's not a sign of use as he's claiming.

Sounds like buyer ignorance turned into remorse. Caveat Emptor!

The only finish that would not have those is satin. Stanewash says there might be tool marks.

"*Note: Stonewashed and Competition Finishes may show machining marks and surface imperfections"
