Now I know that file knives are not everyone's thing. And I've been hesitant in posting these because the general attitude towards recycled steel is....maybe not always hostile but often yeah.

However I have a friend who works for Caterpillar over here in the Netherlands. And he'd seen my first file knife (a hidious thing forged out of an old nicholson file).

And he told me, we throw a crapload of those away all the time. I'm sure I could bring you some.

I thanked him by making a knife out of one of them....which got stolen within a year. So I made him another one that I put his name on.

Now every now and then when I'm waiting for the glue to dry on some of my more "finished" knives. I grab an old file that I softened up beforehand and just start freehand grinding away and making a simple knife.

I recently finished a set of them and after much going back and forth I figured....why not share them..worst thing that could happen is some negative comments but hey, any publicity is good publicity right?

So here's 1 picture, and 3 short videos.

So here's a set of simple file knives.

1) A pocket upswept
2) A....I don't know...utility knife?
3) A big wharncliffe

Enjoy.

That is a great choice of material. Anza has been making knives out of files for years and proven that they are a great material source. Good work man.

Thanks Gentlemen. The feedback I've gotten on my knives with this steel from pretty heavy users (a hunting guide and a farmer among others) have give me enough confidence to keep using this steel.

Every now and then I also do one with handles, even with a tapered tang sometimes.

Thank you, that's my favourite one too. In fact having some "glue" time in the shop again yesterday I grabbed another file and attempted to duplicate that one, which went fairly well.

That was a nice one yes. It was my first time using Snakewood (btw that knife also has a tapered tang and red liners) but will definately not be my last.

Some of my favorite and unique knives are forged from old "made in the USA" files.... And some of my least favorite were made out of "higher end" steels. To me, there is much more to a knife than the steel it's made out of... Nice work.

Not at this time. But I'll fix one up next time during glue time :p

You want to see chisel or regular flat grind?

I'm on who enjoys a nice file knife.

Nothing wrong them them, especially if you test your heat treat!

Did my first Chisel grind the other day. It was a fun experience. With the file you still have to grind off the teeth on the other side otherwise it won't cut later.

I'll grind you out a righthanded chisel grind sometime soon Rolf. You don't have to buy it. I'll do it just for the hell of it.

cool, i really like the wharncliffe one, looks really nice with that leather grip. also some very fine knives on your website.
it is also nice to see someone else from continental europe as well ;)
