some qustions on liners

Do these serve a purpose beyond the cosmetic? I would think that they might help provide a better adhesive seal.

Any helpful hints for applying them? Seems straightforward enough, but I've never done them.

Any materials that work better than others? What functions am I looking for that material to provide?

Better adhesive seal, prevention of warping with certain scale material, prevention of shrinkage, structural stability on things like mammoth, walrus, etc., ability to remove the scales (screwed on) by providing a backing to the main material. Whew...that's about all I can think of. Vulcanized spacer material available at most knife supply places is the most common. You can also use Ti, etc. for more stability.
