from the idiot Nick talks about :)

Naomi, it's just not fair. You cannot have two names that are normally equated to hot girls. When I think about it, I don't recall EVER knowing any girls named Naomi or Nichole who weren't extremely good looking(and, you certainly fit into that catagory).

Take good care of Nick, he needs it. ;) :)

Danbo -

I will take care of him, dont worry about that. And Im glad you think my name is hott... all the Naomi's I know are either Famous or extremly old. But i'll take the compliment... Thanks :)

ya know Nick,, if you would cut about 1/2 of that bottom die off that hammer would hit harder... really... and you would have more room for top tooling ;)

After the link to the photographer's website provided by Matt, :o I'm not entirely convinced that Naomi_Nichole isn't just Nick giving himself another sign-on name, :D after all if he'll pull a shot from a photographer's website . . . :D :o ;)

Maybe I'm wrong, but the photo of the REAL Naomi standing next to the anvil with Nick's knife and the local newspaper in hand would be great!

Nice knife and really great thread regardless

Naomi...

In Japanese it is 直美 (I wonder if this site can display Japanese characters). One way of interpreting it would be "simple beauty". A very appropriate name in this case. Glad to have you with us young lady. Take care of that knifemaker of yours.

Take care,

Bob

I certainly hope you're joking, and it isn't a serious accusation.

Hey Nick
Maybe you missed my question because I started with harassment. So I'll ask again. Why do you quench in oil instead of low temp. salts? I know at one time you were using the low temp. salts.
Thanks. Let's see some more.(of the knife ;))

See ya
Alden

Yeah! Where's all the finished pictures? You take the whole weekend off and now halfway through the next week you still haven't finished it. :jerkit:
Some of us have nothing better to do than check this thread 12 times a day and we need...I mean THEY need to see what you've gotten done:D

Seriously though I hope all is well with you and your family.
Great pictures of what is looking to be an awesome knife.

Have fun.

Yeah sorry about the harrassment, hope you're at the show with a finished knife (and that you got some good pics of it before it got turned into money)

I don't think anyone doubts that Nick can't get a girl as special as Naomi.... I hope I did not come too late for that hug!!
Come on Nick! We need a pic fix. I know life is hectic with work, blades, gym and all the love making going on. I just don't know how you accomplish it all.

Well, I am inspired to learn forging because chicks dig guys with huge anvils!

Sorry guys, I have more pics, but I've been working late and having trouble with my card reader. I've been too tired to mess around with it. Probably has something to do with the 14 hours of sleep I got (that's TOTAL) last week.

Thanks for giving Naomi the warm welcome. Not that it's hard with somebody like her.... :) But it is appreciated none-the-less!

Aldon, I was thinking I had answered your question. Sorry!

I didn't use the low temp salt very much. I got REALLY REALLY REALLY into the clay hardening thing (well, right BEFORE I built the salt pot actually) and water and oil were just more conducive to doing what I wanted.

Now, I have several quench tanks here in the shop with Park #50 and AAA.

After doing all of my thermal cycles in the salt, I then austenize in the high temp salt. This blade I soaked at 1485 for ten minutes after the salts leveled back out, and then quenched in "warm to the touch" Park #50. I tempered it three times and came out with a Rockwell of 59/60.

I forgot to take pics of the Rockwell tester I bought.... but I did finally buy one. Yet another attempt to reduce variables and unknowns.

I love the HeatBath products... just not dealing with them (Heatbath sales reps). lol

If I was using L6 and/or an L6/O1 damascus all the time, I'd probably use the low temp salt more. It seems to work well for 52100 also, but I like the AAA for 52100.

Jason... I often wonder if you are still doing this stuff. I'm going to guess by the fact that you posted.... that you are. I hope so!!! :)

Promise I'll get more pics soon and also have a pro shot by our local (and now international) photography hero, Jim Cooper.

Yeah I'm still doin' it. Nowhere near as much as I should be.
I moved back to Oregon last year and haven't had a shop since. :grumpy:I did set up a temporary shop in a friends garage in exchange for running new electrical circuits and lights but it is a half hour drive so I almost never get out there.
I am about to go at it again pretty hard though. I just bought a lathe last week and the week before I got a surface grinder. Next month I start building the new shop. It will be small but all mine:D

Great tutorial!

I want to know where you got this filing jig!

Looks a heck of a lot nicer than the piece of crap I use!
