Some Random Photos & A Modified H.E.S.T.

An hour for that? Actually less? That's a cool mod and really not so hard to do obviously

I happen to like the architecture of churches.

I took these the night before last.

I love the detail and craftsmanship on this building.

I want to get a wide-angle lens and re-shoot this one.

Then a better shot of the modded HEST.

Mist,

Nice pics of Chattanooga. The one from across the river looking towards the aquarium is nice as well as those from Coolidge park. Thanks - reminds me of the time we lived there.

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed the pics

Hey man...what happened to your HEST?? :)) Looks like those machinists that are missing one finger...:))

Yeah...I got a little more carried away than I meant to. I was mainly interested in creating a notch at the base of it to catch on things when prying....and then I took about 0.125" more off the length than I meant to.

I still have one in pristine condition too though  I carry the modded one close to the body and the other on my pack.

Always fascinated by your urban pictures mistwalker. Some of this bunch have way too much noise and some other artifacts for my taste but to each his own. I've been rocking a D60 with the 18-200mm lens and it's a quite versatile if a bit heavy for backpacking setup. Wish I had waited a while and got one of the newer cameras as they do much, much better at higher ISO settings which can be very useful.

Your HEST mod looks very useful. Frozen car doors are extremely annoying.

Last winter I found that the stock RC-3 sheath makes for a quite workable improvised ice scraper, as long as the ice isn't too thick.

Thanks. Oh...I am far from proficient with this camera as of yet. I've only had it out shooting photos a few times. I'm still learning what I can do with it, and I am still trying to understand the ViewNX software that comes with it. I have friends who have played with some of my photos on editing software to show me what they can look like. I'm still playing around with it with the goal, as ever, being that the next ones are better. I am wanting an 18-200mm lens but it'll have to wait a few more weeks...which gives me more time to see what I can do with what I have and maybe appreciate the new lens even more. I may just get the 55-200VR for now as it is a bit cheaper. I'm wanting to get a D90 at some point down the road but I have a lot to learn before I spend that much.

You got that right. Nothing like getting out of the truck up on the mountain in the winter just to walk around and take a few pics only to find myself frozen out of it on my return...it is annoying.

I learned last winter the HEST sheath works the same way.

I'm at a complete loss when it comes to software editing. All my photos are straight off the camera, although on rare occasion I will do some cropping. Someday I'll learn the software, but for now it's a black art to me. I also am still to a certain extent stuck in my film photography mode, where I had no other option but to get the picture right on the camera. Software opens up whole new realms in photography, but it can be daunting and I think many people, in my opinion, get carried away with it quite a bit.

One thing I will tell you about the 18-200 is that I think it isn't quite as clear as some other lenses. Seems my 18-55 was a bit clearer, and I got a 55-200 on sale with the camera that is very noticeably clearer. It is, however, a great lens if you don't want to carry a whole pack full of lenses around. I'm willing to take a bit of a hit in clarity so I don't have to pack two (at least) lenses instead.

I've heard that from another friend. I'm going to try to borrow one of each for a few shots before I make up my mind. I may just go ahead and get the 18-200 for hikes, and keep the 18-55 for my work. I like the clarity of this 18-55 for close up shots.
