I am thinking about coming up in late October for family business in the area, and thought I would squeeze in a weekend in the mountains.
I'll be car camping, at least to set up a base, and maybe hike in further for a single night in a small tent.
What can I expect temperature wise? I am fairly familiar with the area, but it has been years since I have camped there. Most of my Virginia camping has been summer time, and up around Bland or Tazwell.

never mind......................

I found the weather info answer online, and I called a cousin for camping area tips.

sorry about that! Wind is a &^%$ on the Thomas Knob shelter top but its a great place to stay, and you get into some different habitats. I got powdered by snow even in the shelter during the winter, and the ponies there are mischievous.

We gorilla camped at the trailhead and did a Mt. Rogers summit day hike (~10 miles round trip) on 10/23/06. Temps were in the high 20's with a dusting of snow. This was much cooler than we expected. The wild ponies are very cool and surprisingly friendly. Damascus, VA is the closest town and has an awesome outdoor supply store. I had the best blueberry scones of my life at a coffee shop there. Great hiking!

Again, thanks for the replies. Joe, I was through Sparta on the 13th, but as it was VERY early in the morning, I did not stop by or call. :D

Hope to see you in October. I have new knives to show you.

Hope the wife and the wonder dog are well.
