I am new to this forum and am interested in learning more about wilderness survival but have found no relevant training courses in my area. I was hoping that some of you good folks might have some suggestions on helpful sites or books or something to help me along. I got my RC-4 and want to get out and use it. Thanks for any ideas.

Here are a few great books on survival and outdoors:

SAS Survival Handbbok
John Lofty Wiseman

US Army Survival Field Manual 21-76

Bushcraft: A Serious Guide to Survival and Camping
Christopher Molloy

Build the Perfect Survival Kit
John McCann

Look to the Boy Scouts Of America for some great info on pretty basic woodsmanship, navigation, camping and the like.

The RAT cutlery website has some great info if you look around a little.

Lastly, check out "Bushcraft" by Mors Kochanski (prolly spelled that wrong), it's a really great book with a ton of illistrations and info.

After that, try going to a local bookstore and getting some nature guides that are specific to your area and learn the animals and plants.

Welcome to the forum.

I just got "Survive" by Les Stroud (Survivorman). It just came out recently, and is just as good as you'd expect. Lots of illustrations, about 400pages long.

Welcome Buffer Although I do recommend a well stocked bushcraft-survival library here is a link to the ten bushcraft books, read it on line:)

What I always found useful are field guides that also contain some background information on plant usage (is it edible, has it been used for making tools etc.)

Lots of great titles right off the hop. Much appreciated everyone. I already have the SAS survival guide but thanks to you i should have enough to hold me for a while.

I have picked up a few more since this pic was taken

I've got to be honest. Two hours in the woods alone is better than 50 hours of reading.

Water, shelter, fire, food. Go forth and learn.

Tony Nailed it. Any of those books is a great read. I have most of those, and see a few Id like to have. (the ruby ridge and waco in particular)

Not really Wilderness related, but you NEED to read Day By Day Armagedon by JL Bourne. It is a must. Its Zombie Fiction, but its written as a survivors journal in a post apocalyptic world. Lots of good stuff about prepardness, survival attitude, and its such a good book, I guarantee you will finish it in just a few days if not sooner. My favorite fiction book ever. Looking forward to the sequel.

I also just got this one ..an excellent read as well
How to Survive the End of the World by James Wesley Rawles

TTD, I thought I had a good collection, but you could open up a library:eek:

Speaking of Waco has anyone watched the "Rules of Engagement" and if so what did you think of it? Is it worthwhile?
