A little story with not such a good end. Some of you may remember that I was looking for a knife for a friend (as his son was born) - at first just a whittler of some sorts. But before I could actually buy one I was offered a very nice Boker beer barrel whittler from one of our very own. And not that he asked nothing in return, he even included a letter for my friend and a little Queen pen knife from me (that I only discovered after I opened the package). So I decided to go one step further and bought a lovely 4" swayback from Jon Loyd - a really solid and beautifully crafted knife. Before sending these two knives to my friend I also included a few small blocks of wood to start whittling and a nice chocolate box for his wife (not to forget who actually gave the birth). All was packed and sent to neighbouring country within EU. But the package never arrived. It has been 5 weeks already and so the chance for it to show up is basically 0. Now comes the dumb part - the package was not insured as it was my wife who took it to post office and when she asked whether it should be insured I chickened out and said 'no', because I did not want to make her aware that I am sending curiously expensive box to my friend (and the chocolate-box did not quite warrant the insurance).

So, here I am feeling really dumb, but what hurts more than the financial loss, is that I was not able to deliver that beer barrel whittler that was so generously gifted and that a beautifully crafted knife from John was lost before being used and appreciated. I can not help but think that the package would have been handled differently and possibly arrive safely had it been insured and tracked.

Sorry for sharing all this self-pity, but maybe there is something to learn form it. That little Queen pen knife will remain as a remainder.

Your heart is in the right place; hang in there! I don't know anything about shipping over there but the next best thing to insurance is a tracking number!

That is so frustrating. If it is anything like the post office here in the US, it will likely eventually show up, but not always.

I feel your pain.

Thank you. Well, packages on this short commute arrive normally within 4-7 days, so unless a wonder happens, the package is gone. Had I done the right thing I would have had insurance and tracking, but unfortunately I have neither. So the joke is on me this time.

I too have a beautiful HJ floating around the World somewhere- nothing at all to do with the great guy whom I bought the knife from - its just one of those things, The sender tried to return my money, but I cant see why he should be held responsible for others fault.

What really irks me is that it was a beautiful, very very tidy - and not so easy to find HJ- thinking that it may be being used and abused by some postal thief actually gets to me.

I have done what you have to and just put it away as one of life's experiences.

Shame though - and not so nice to read.

When I get home let me look around I might have one again let me look if I do its all yours my friend things happen it's what we do with the results that matter.

Perhaps it's a customs issue? Might be stating the obvious, but could no insurance and no tracking be a red flag indicator to customs for some reason? Just a rhetorical question I guess.

I hope your knives turn up guys  I once had one go astray for 3 months, only to turn up bacvk with the sender. The only knife I've had that actually went missing was sent to another forum member who lives the next county over from me :grumpy:

I really appreciate your kind words. I only hope my post does not come over the wrong way (me trying to abuse kindness of others). I just really wanted to share the little bad luck / bad decision of mine.

No, it should not be customs as the shipping happened within EU member states. There should be no customs involved.

I received a Christmas card from my maternal grandmother, in 2005.
4 years after she had passed away.
9 years after she mailed it, according to the postmark.

In short, don't give up. The package may arrive a "little" later than expected.

(My granny lived in California, I lived in Florida)

I had a knife which came to me from the US via AUSTRALIA - despite being clearly addressed to me in the UK - It not only went to Australia, but it was opened by Customs there, and delayed for several weeks. Once again, I really hope your knife turns up Matus, you too Duncan

There are lots of tales out there of packages taking the long way to get to their destination. The longest for me was an 6+ month tour that a package took before being sent BACK TO ME!
Hopefully it will show up eventually:thumbup:

Here's a picture of the tracking of a car part one of my friends ordered. It shows his part being routed through Radcliff, Louisville, Forest Park, Elk Grove Village, back to Louisville, back to Radcliff, again to Louisville, back to Forest park, again to Elk Grove Village, right back to Louisville, and finally being delivered to him.

I understand that the OP's package is in the EU and not the US, but things do happen that cause massive delays. In this instance the package traveled thousands of miles over three weeks to get somewhere 300 miles away. It's possible that your package could still show up.

You guys managed to give me a little hope - thank you for that :) I will just wish for the best.

I would say it will show up eventually. Wait another week or two...
Had some packs i've been waiting for almost 3 months, and they still appeared, out of nowhere.

We had several wedding invitations that didn't make it to the addressees until a month or two after we were married. Good thing we called to check on the RSVP.

Makes one wonder at the logic of it all? I've had the same thing happen more than once and it always amuses me.

There's still hope for this well meaning package. Don't give up.
