i spent a couple of hours out in the woods behind the house today with my little brother along for the trip. it was impossible to get him out of the house, but once we got out there he had fun. he is ten, by the way. he helped me out with the skills practice and i tried to teach him some things. i hope some of it stuck. if not, there will be plenty of other times for him to pick it up with me.

just out back of the house there is a smallish mountain, relatively, but its just fine for bumming around on. i still haven't explored it yet (just moved here over last summer). i am waiting to have a buddy over to canvas it.

getting near my favorite spot, a 15 minute walk straight up from the house:

taking the long way around the big rocks in previous pic to get to the top of the big rocks. normally i would climb straight up, but i don't want to demonstrate wreckless behavior...and its not safe:

found this cute little water fall heading a little farther up from my favorite spot:

got to a new spot and set up "camp":

we were basically on a big huge rock, and there was only a thin layer of soil to stick the stakes into. we put snow on the corners to hold the stakes down:

decided to build a fire. this is how i do it most of the time, especially in the snow:
1. collect wood:

2. make a bed:

3. make shavings (courtesy of my mora #1):

4. insulate with little sticks:

5. insert match. sit back and enjoy:

time to explore a little farther up and then head back home. camp broken down and fire thoroughly smothered:

we have some good sized rocks up here in CT:

a horizon veiw. camera was dead level. the pic came out funky because the sun was starting to get low and was coming right at the lense:

at home it was time to enjoy a nice cocoa and some popcorn with chocolate and caramel, along with a little catalogue browsing:

i'm just outside of avon in canton. about two miles from the collins axe factory. its a good area, still plenty of woods. collinsville is a nice little old town type of place to go for lunch and some novelty shopping.

siguy you are a lucky guy to live where you live it looks like. Very nice job on setting up a camp and preparing your fire.
Take care

AWESOME!

if more kids had people like you take them out to experience the woods and learn stuff, society would'nt be so messed up!

I remember the first time my old neighbour took me hiking in the woods, i think i was 6 or 7. Showed me animal tracks, little frozen creeks, the winter apple tree stash, how ot make a fire...etc.

cool pics

Get your little bro out more often! Get him a nice knife and make him a believer.
I can't wait to go camping with my little brother this summer, I am thinking of giving him my fallkniven F1.

i gave him a little folding lockback a little over a year ago now, and i gave him a small fixed blade to toss into his pack when we go out.

he has a blade, the only issue is that he lacks alot of the fine motor to make nice controlled cuts. i guess its time for more practice...;D

That pretty cool that you take the time to hang out with your bro. That look like some beautiful land you got out there. I bet it looks a lot better in the spring or summer.

Glad to see young men and boys outside instead of infront of the video games. Extremely nice area you have. Take full advantage of it. I would suggest you get your brother a pair of boots. Those shoes will not keep him warm and make him less likely to go more often.

he really seems to enjoy it outside, as long as he has something to do (like helping set up the shelter or starting the fire)

about the boots; today when we went back outside for a couple of hours my toes started getting numb in my boots but he said he was warm in his sneakers. go figure.

my parent's wisely decided to keep videogames out of the house, and truthfully i have never missed them. i still got to play them occasionally visiting freind's houses, but they weren't that much fun. my freinds and i usually ended up exploring the woods anyways.

we decided to do some hiding, just for giggles:

i managed to burn myself trying to retreive the steel mug from the fire with the cocoa in it, i didn't bring anything to grab it with (ie pliers) and i decided to see if the handle was cool enough to grab with my hand. it wasn't. i ended up using one of my aluminum tent stakes to grab it (only spilled a little) and set it in the snow to cool a bit.

next time i will spend more time looking for the fuel bottle for my alcohol stove, the fire was very messy and difficult to control. also made a mess of my shiny steel mug, which my stove has never done.

Great pics, great place and great narration to go with it !!!! Keep up the good work bro !!!!

the folding saw i got from my uncle when i was visiting him last summer, he had two.

the handle is marked "outers" on this one, but i have seen the same saw marked with other brands as well. if i remember correctly, i saw one in the camping section of the local walmart, and possibly at the local Dick's as well.
