Some unusual woods out of Texas

It came out great! Love the way it gets thicker at the pommel. Your work and pictures never disappoint.

Thanks Folks, Appreciate the comments.

Andrew, Sure never heard of that but I recon I'll be there next year with bells on. I have creations that rival the best of the stuff on that sight. I'm starting today for next year. Thanks for that info.

I made a sheath yesterday for the knife. Only my 3rd but it came out OK. I need to up my game in leatherwork. The grain on that mesquite can be seen better in these pics.

Roaming through these thick Texas woods I've found a heavy bladed Bowie to be the best thing to carry and I've tried a lot of stuff. These are cheap Bowie that I dressed up both altering the grip and upgrading the scales. Both are from post oak trees here on the farm.

My favorite woods carry for my post-oak/yaupon thicket is a plain Ontario GI Machete (the ones that are about 2x thicker than a regular machete). It might look good with some nice oak handle slabs too.

Sounds like the heavy blade would work. When I've tried a machete they were just a little too unwieldy in those close quarters. I wish I could just napalm those dang yaupon.

Since this came back up here is a knife made from the second chunk of mesquite posted above. I finished this last week.

Nicely done. Wider at the pommel is a great detail few incorporate in their designs.

I'm not at all attempting to highjack your thread in any way, those are some beautiful knife handles you made.
I know nothing about harvesting nice wood, but my Bradford Pear exploded, because that's what they all do, and look what I found inside! I am now addicted to the hunt as well. I sanded this piece to see what i had, and am now waiting a couple of years for it to dry along with the rest of the tree. I have enough to make guitar bodies and knives out the wazoo. From what I've read pear is good hardwood and has very very tiny pores.
Btw I'm your neighbor on the Gulf Coast of Texas.
If your in Texas there are exploded Pear trees around for sure.

Thanks! I've done a few that way. Both those Bowies are.

and here are some 501's I'm doing. The bottom 3 are ones I did, or redid. They all have varying degrees of flair.

Very nice wood. Bradford is an ornamental, correct? I have none here at the farm and these series of knives are just woods from this land but I'd sure love some like that.

Man o man, I shudder at the thought of that horrible sh!te  I use to do pipeline survey in south and east TX a lot and we used to always joke about needing a flamethrower. I've had whole crews get tangled and stuck in those thickets, where you had to crawl out on your belly. Yaupon mixed with greenbriar is the stuff of nightmares.

Yeah, I've always joked if mesquite, greenbrier and yaupon were worth something I'd be a billionaire.
