Some Wild Edibles Stuff...

Mist, great pictures and information. I didn't know about queen ann's lace. I plinked around and I'm fairly certain that we have that in abundance down here. Wild edibles is a dying knowledge and it is a shame. Some of them are very, very tasty and better for you than grocery store food. And the fact that they are extra free makes them even better.

I'd love to have a knowledge base like Cody Lundin or someone like that. I'd never go to wal mart again.

I'd love it if you could/would teach a class or do some kind of hike pointing things out for this fall!

I'll see what I can do this fall man, depends on how late in the autumn the gathering is. Usually late summer and early autumn is better for these kinds of wild edibles. I am going to be doing a one or two day course on this for some friends at UTC late this summer or early autumn (depending on their schedules) where I'll put out my hat and except donations from those who enjoy and benefit from the class :) . And then an advanced fire starting course later on in the autumn. It will be here locally but you're you're welcome to come join in on either if you like.

as for hemlock, well... yeah, don't go near that :) some say, that just TOUCHING the plant is asking for it.

The book..is AWESOME! I know it's such a platitude to say 'The book is better than the movie' but it so often rings true, and that's saying a lot because I REALLY enjoyed the movie too! Jon Krakauer wrote it (also the author of 'Into Thin Air'). Can't recommend picking that book up a lot, he includes a lot of other similar real life anecdotes of people who decided just to pack up and head 'into the wild' and never came back within the book, really great read.

I have all these things in my yard and haven't worked up the gumption to actually DO anything with 'em. We do have some nice semi-wild garlic chives, and one sweet perennial big chive that I've used on occasion.

Yep, have most of them in mine too. Transplanting some of the garlic. I like using them when I cook over a fire, it brings a closer connection to the earth.

Yeah, they're everywhere you look. We passed enough on the way to the store the other night to start a cannery :)

Muskrat is dark meat with a fairly strong flavor. The cleaner the water you catch 'em in the better :thumbup:

Great post as usual, I like how you mentioned the Hemlock and Queen Ann's Lace problem. The Hemlock can stop your beating heart, so its a good idea to keep the sniff test in mind.
Its amazing and very relaxing to actually realize how much "food" is all around us. Hunting wild edibles is a great reason to go out and get some dirt time!

Also..man, I wan't a BK11 just like yours when I grow up. That looks really cool with the Bluing on the center!
 
Very nice post. I love getting out in the woods and bringing home dinner. I've got a few spots I go that are getting ready to be plentiful in wild blackberry and gooseberry plants and will be baking some pies.

The wild onions and garlic you found are great with some grilled up rabbit. Mmmmm now I'm hungry.

Again great post I love wild edibles and this helped get me excited about the season.
