 Alright I might be ranting or just plain cheap but I CANNOT bring myself to pay the kind of money custom knife makers are asking. Does ANYONE know where I can find an inexpensive cord wrapped w/ same, Japanese style knife with decent steel for around the 40-60 buck range (maybe even as high as 70 but that's pushin it; prefferably 3-5in blade)? Maybe that's asking too much, or maybe I'm just dreaming. Heck, even just cord wrapped w/ same with decent steel would do. I mean those knives are great and cool and all but I just can't do it. WAY too poor, and to be perfectly honest I KNOW that a good knife does not have to cost 100+ dollars. I'm sorry I'm ranting, it's a combination of frustration and being poor I suppose, but like I said even if I had the money I cannot see paying that much for something not a sword or tanto size blade hand forged and clay tempered. I really can't. I've been scouring the net for hours and still nothing even REMOTELY close to that price range. Anyone's help or even OFFERS would be nice. Again sorry for the rant.

So you think custom makers should spend days or weeks making a knife and sell it for under $100? Maybe if you're having your custom knife made in a Chinese sweat shop by a bunch of 8 year old kids.

Decent factory knives are available in the under-$40 range. Decent handmades are available under $100.

What is the problem? Not exactly the piece you're fantasizing about? Tuff cookies.

CRKT makes something similar to what you're asking for. The other alternative is to save your pennies for what you really want.

What you are looking for is the CRKT Corkum First Strike. That's the only knife I know of that fits in that category. I've handled one, and I thought it was pretty nice, even though it is AUS6M.

imho the CRKT corkum first strike sounds like what ya are after, have seen one and they look really good for the $$

I have a $1 mid-tech japanese style knife - a big machine stamped out the basic shape, then some kid spent a minute running the chisel grind over the sander. I cord wrapped the handle too. ;)

Make one yourself, than maybe you'll understand.

I agree. Go to someone like Jantz Supply, buy a blank, learn heat treating, grinding, polishing, etc. and you have no one to blame but yourself if it's a piece of junk. Besides, it will be a fun project and you will learn why some are more than others.

If you cant see yourself buying an expensive knife, then dont! Forget all the comments about quality, etc and remember that unless you are sure about your purchase, then you wont be happy. Its like buying a high dollar car when a mid priced one will fit your needs and be easier on your wallet.
I just bought a Ranger. They wanted 5K more for the extra 2 doors! All else was the same. it wasnt worth the extra $$.The kids can slide the seat.

Maybe I'm just too careful with it or don't do it right, but I'd charge $100 just to cordwrap a handle! What a pain in the a**! Very difficult to do, especially to do properly, and it's hell on your hands. I'm all for getting a cheap knife, but for what you want you may be able to find a used knife like that, but customs of that type are hard to come by for under $100, especially if they're new. It takes hours of hands-on work to make a knife, even if you're using lots of machines to help out. Good luck in your search.

How bout the Cold Steel Spike;cord wrapped handle, decent steel (420 sub zero quench), 4.5 inch blade... retails for 40.00$, which means you could probably find it for 25$ on the net if you are cheap enough to look real hard. Even comes in three blade designs... a tanto being one of them if you like Japanese style.

I've also got a TOPS knife called the street scalpel, not cord wrapped... micarta scales instead, but you might consider that if you want a skinny little fixed blade that is very, very sharp for under 70.00$... its what you want.

buy a laminated japanese kitchen knife. drill two holes in the tang. do the cordwrap yourself. there ya go....seriously. I've been meaning to do that myself....
