Somebody stabbed me

Wow, you did a great job on the handle. :) Pictures look good too! That's one pretty Pen knife.

Thank you again. It seemed incomplete like I didn't finish the job so I went ahead and checkered that left rear corner where the natural grain mark was and it worked just fine. Only one little spot where I broke thru a layer and it doesn't look like it's gonna be an issue.
It looks complete now and I'm happy with it.
Any recommendations on what to coat it with as suggested earlier. Something hopefully thin enough that it won't plug up the checkering?

Thanks for the kind words everybody. Pugs, that will probably be the first one I send you for a sheath when I stockpile enough marbles to pay for it. While not traditional I suppose I do like it a lot.

Sounds great man, I look forward to it.

XxdrpxX, what would you seal it with out of curiosity? I was concerned when I read kookery's post about it peeling in layers after I'd already started checkering but I didn't see anything like that at all.

I don't change my socks very often. I don't shower very often either (it keeps my perma-socks from getting wet that way). I promise you that your knife would peel in layers too, if it ever got close enough to win a fight with my foot!

Super glue would definitely plug up the checking. If you applied it one groove at a time, and then ran a toothpick through the groove, that might keep it from plugging the checkering. It takes a while for it to harden, since the superglue doesn't seem to bond as quickly with the horn as it does with other things, like socks and feet.

On my knife, it's kind of a mess, and there's really no way to control it once the super glue gets out of the bottle. It's very drippy, and will end up in lots of other places besides the grooves. That may not be too hard to fix if you're handy with sand paper, but you might want to test it in a small area first to make sure the glue is softer than the horn. Otherwise, you'll have nothing but glue left over after the sanding removes horn from the glue. I would be most concerned with scratching the brass.

I used the super glue to seal all the gaps on my knife where water could penetrate and start fermenting or rusting things. It worked better than I expected, and I can liberally drench my knife with blood - er, soap and water - and it totally gets rid of all the DNA evidence - oops, I meant to say "bread crumbs" :)

I wonder is something like Varathane or a oil based varnish of some kind would adhere and protect it enough?

I'm not real big on Super Glue, I'm still a duct tape and wire kind of guy, old technology.

That checkering is sweet but I have a cheap ant removable solution. I have an M-43 with a horn handle and felt the grip was beautiful but impractical. I bought some friction tape from the electrical section of my local super hardware store. It is used to help electricians grip wire as they pull it through conduit. It works fine on Kukuri handles. As it gets old it looses some of its stickiness but after holding the handle in your warm hands the stickiness returns to a useful level. The tape is black so it blends right in.
