Someone in Arkansas to sharpen a nerd sword

One of the original series great attractions for me was how they took real science fiction writers to do scripts for them, and how they did some classic science fiction themes and even stories, like Arena.
Thought I'd revive this older, meandering thread to update, and mention that I've got the original series on DVD now, and I agree with Esav that many of the stories, especially in the series' first season, are just excellent ... in fact it's amazing to see what influence the original series clearly had on later Star Treks, and probably on subsequent science fiction in general.

But I also have say, the second season is turning out to be kind of a let-down, with episodes more of the "space adventure" genre than serious sci-fi. Otherwise production quality certainly looks to have improved over time, and other major characters besides Kirk seeing some real development. But the stories in the first season -- wow, a number of them are truly outstanding.

Hmmm, guess I should mention knives to make this relevant ... oh yeah, in "Friday's Child," those were some pretty serious pig-stickers the natives of the planet carried. Kind of a blend of Bowie and butcher's knife, pretty formidable for general hacking of enemies. :)

"The Inner Light" ... IMO perhaps the finest hour of TV ever broadcast. But I'd have to add, "Parallels" -- a favorite of all bat'leth aficionados :) -- ranks right up there, along with "Yesterday's Enterprise."

And would you believe? Except for Star Trek TNG, I've never been much into science fiction, or even Star Trek.

Up there, sure. I'd stack Comes the Inquisitor or A Late Delivery From Avalon off Babylon 5 against anything ever made. Hell, I'm just an old softie, sometimes- the ending of Soul Hunter from season 1 still makes me tear up a little. ;)

Ever get it done, OP?

It's "the Inner Light" episode (TNG) for pure tear jerking. The best all time would have to be "Balance of Terror" (OS) for best drama. the next would have to be the one with the planet eater episode (as a trekkie, I'm ashamed to say that the name of that episode eludes me).

(the woman who played "Leta" the B'Joran dabo girl on DS 9 was there too - She's hot!).

Chase Masterson? Yes indeed. Hooray for intergalactic bosoms!

Weren't they the folk that looked like renaissance "turkish-jesters" or something? The villain at the end gets a knife thrown in him real skorry-like?

I was afraid someone might say that. I would certainly do my best not end up on there.

Nobody wants to see you hurt is all. Things happen. I stuck an x-acto in my thumb earlier today.

Yeah, they did have a kind of a renaissance look :) ... and the weapons they threw with such deadly efficiency seemed to be more like oversize shuriken:

Ah yes, that's them! I bet even "Mac-Coy" would be loathe to risk mocking their traditional vesture.
