When I posted a picture of my hawk/knife combo(ATC VN Tactical/Busse Basic #9) in the ATC forum on this thread:

Hawk newbie question - be gentle

Someone dissed my Basic #9 saying it was a waste of money and told ME I have a lot to learn and he has never even used one.... See for yourself.

blueflinthawk you have alot to learn. That big knife is a waste of money. The blade is twice the length of the handle. Grab a knife with a 5 inch handle six inch blade and be surprised. I used to carry one of those BIG cold steel voyager knives. I ran into a ranger in a archery shop. He asked why I was carrying a knife with a blade so big. I took his advice bought a benchmade folder and the cold steel knife sits in my closet.

Go hunting and gut a deer with that big knife and when it slips out and sticks in your leg tell us how many stiches you have. If you live. What I don't like to hear is stupid people doing stupid things with guns, bows, knives and yes tomahawks. I don't care what you do with your hawk that goes for everbody. Just don't ruin it for every body else. If you don't know what I'm getting at watch the news.

Just remember that even James Madison would agree that everyone is entitled to an opinion. You could show this Gentleman plenty of documentary footage of individuals getting by very well with larger knives,( the Nepalise for example) and most likely be subjected to another vituperating retort, or, at best, a blank stare. P**s on him, the tacit testimony gleened from your own experience with your #9 should be solice enough.

I could respect his opinion fine if he had actually USED a Basic #9... he doesn't even seem to know what a Busse is.

Just because one guy tells him a blade is too big he goes and buys a smaller one. He only has two knives and compares COLD STEEL to BUSSE!

I am sorry... I am just in shock - I have never seen someone diss a Busse so bad... especially when they have never used one.

If someone that ignorant disses you and Busse then consider it a compliment. Anything or anyone that someone so ignant (ignant=ignorant + attitude) is against must be good.

Inform him that people who think their uses dictate what everybody else does with a knife are the ones who are stupid.
Ask him to grab his 5-6" blade on a 5" handle and chop down a tree, or split some good-sized wood with it. Or maybe try clearing briars with that same knife or a tomahawk, for that matter.
Skinning a deer...sure it's too big. Who cares? That's not what it's made for. Just like that hawk won't make a very good substitute for a machete.
The knife market wouldn't be very large if we all had the same use for a blade.
Put him on ignore, and move on to posts by people who have some sense, and contribute something worthwhile to discussion.

"The blade's too long"....begs the question-for what?
A "Ranger" in a store (who knew nothing about this guy's personal uses) tells him his blade is too long, and that shapes his little "reality"? LMAO, that's pathetic.

BlueFlintHawk:

Hey man :) How things going?

Don't let him get under your skin. The most important thing is that you know that Busse will meet your needs without ever failing. If he wants to use a smaller blade, more power to him, but we all know smaller blades are not suited for all types of chores.

The question of "too big for what?" is exactly right, it's all relative to the task at hand.

You've got a great knife, that pride and confidence you feel when it's in your hand it the only thing that matters :)

LOL, when someone as ingnorant as this tries to tell you how it is, it's just not so insulting to me. Entertaining is the word :D

BTW, looks like a great combo to me!

Thanks Uncle Screwtape, Owen, bae, Andrew Lynch, Nimrod and DN. I do love my Basic #9 to death. It is my favorite knife! I just don't like it when someone like that tells me I have a lot to learn :D

For the chores I do, no other knife is used more than my #9.

I can't move on yet... I'm bored... he is my only entertainment right now :D

Well, I would think a little about reconsidering that ice-pick grip of yours... :D

You got to love...."I ran into a ranger in a archery shop."
What was he, a park ranger?

You have one of the best knifes made, use it with pride.;)

Edited so as not to fuel the fire.

Everybody needs to lighten up a notch.
Just because someone has a large knife doesn't mean it will be used for a crime.
I have never used my guns, knifes, hatchets, or finger nail clippers for anything illegal.

Every one has their own personal preferance about blade length, why don't we leave it at that.

Nah, I took some lessons from someone special and that is a grip I like for knife/hawk combo. Although I can see why it might look to some people that I have an extreme loathing for my crotch :D

Don't worry... I know what I'm doing... sometimes :D

It was an army ranger who I became friends with. If you don't understand watch the news there are plenty of people out there every day doing stupid things with guns, knives like commiting MURDER! Which all of us pay the price when the government looks this way and another stupid law is passed that takes away your RIGHTS! I don't what tomahawks to be the next Item to be something they want to take from us.

Owenm I would love to watch you chop down a tree with a knife. That way people could see how stupid you really are! Ever heard of a axe, or chainsaw?

I HAVE chopped down trees with a Busse #9.... you should actually TEST the knife sometime.

Who do you think you are coming to the Busse Forum calling a respected member, Owen, stupid? Don't even... You have proved further how sad you are. Owen is a great guy who knows more about knives than you could ever hope to!

Do you know him personaly? If someone is chopping down a tree with a knife it had better be in a survival situation. Or that person is really bored.

So let me get this straight.. Runny Bear meets a guy in shop, who claims to be a Army Ranger. Said Ranger criticizes young Boo-Boo's large knife. Next thing ya know, Runny-Bunny Bear takes this as the absolute gosphel -- and now uses the precious sugar puff of knowledge as a basis to call BFH and OwenM stupid.

Nothing like betting your life on hard earned, self validated, personal experiences.

Did the Army Ranger tell you about the super-hyper ultralight radium powered Chainsaw/Chaingun they carry on LRRP missions? That's the real reason they don't need knives.

Just another illiterate 12 year, running around trolling.

Ok guys, lets keep things in perspective here :) Let's not send this thread down a dark road.

Running Bear, I saw you comments on the other thread, and everyone is welcome to use whatever he/she wants to accomplish a task at hand. You are more than welcome to use any size and brand knife you like, and BlueFlintHawk has the same right.

People don't have to agree, but that is no reason to start throwing out verbal name calling and the such.

Everyone's opinion is respected, and I mean everyone.

I think Running Bear is absolutely correct in everything he says. Every gun shop I go into has an ex-seal or green beret or ranger in it (just like everyone in Vietnam was a sniper, I didn't realize the U.S. armed forces never had an infantry). I tell you what, I hang on every word spoken to me by these greatly intellectual people! After the last conversation I had at the local gunstore I am convinced all I need to have with me at all times is a dildo and a fly swatter(I'll have to contact Normark for a holster). I have thrown away all my knives and de-milled all of my firearms because of what I have heard on the news. I bought six cell phones and placed them strategically around my home so I am never three steps away from 911. I have also placed a large sign in my front yard stating, "This is a peace loving gun free home, we refuse to help ourselves. Please, spread the love!"

Running Bear isn't so bad. He just doesn't realize this is a "knife" thing. We talk about chopping down trees with our knives over here, this isn't the STIHL forums you know.

As far as carrying a knife AND a tomahawk: The Basic 9 defeats the purpose of having the 'hawk at all. A 'hawk and a Basic 3 or BA would be a better suited pair IMO. Then, if you have enough room in you pack for the STIHL and gasoline, you'd be good to go!
