Ruger has just come out with a new little pocket gun called the LCP. Has anyone seen one, does anyone have any info on it?

Thanks

From the reviews I've read on The High Road, it sounds like Ruger took the Kel-tec P32 and refined it.

It is the LCP, not LPS and yes, it is basically the the P-32 design but a touch larger. As a matter of fact it is large enough the you can get the Kel_tec PF-9 and only gain .7 inches in length and .7 inches in height but have a much more powerful caliber at a cheaper price.

After looking into the new ruger it appears, as mentioned above to be a mildly tweaked kel-tec. I'm pretty disappointed in ruger for this i expected better. if i wanted a kel-tec i'd buy one from the company that's been making them for awhile. I'll pass on this one.

From my research they are just about the same size.

Kel-Tec P3AT Ruger LCP
Weight 7.2 Oz 9.42 Oz
Frame Width 0.798" 0.790"
Barrel Length 2.745" 2.796"
Slide Width 0.748" 0.741"
Overall Length 5.14" 5.172"
Overall Height 3.576" 3.612"
Cartridge Capacity 6+1 6+1

I was not comparing the LCP to the P-32 when I gave the .7 inch comparisons , I was comparing it to the PF-9 which is only slightly larger and in 9mm, not 32acp. And while not much larger than a P-32 it is as I stated it is a "touch" (meaning very slightly) larger.

There is a decent review over at gunblast.com. I take their reviews with a tiny grain of salt as they tend to be big Ruger fans, still a nice review though.

over on the gun forums it seems to be too early to tell. not enough reviews yet. i think it will have some teething pains, especially concerning smileys....since it seems to be using the same black coated mags as the kel tec.

time will tell. the first few hundreds of customers will do the beta testing for them. wait a few months and the jury will be in by then.

FYI: i like ruger and think their firearms are generally great....i own 2 of them and am quite satisfied.

they look pretty darn similar. is the ruger actually manufactured by kel tech? or did ruger buy the rights to the design?

It might surprise you just how little you have to change to get around patents on firearms, look at the Glock and the S&W Sigma. Ruger guns normally are of decent quality, function well, and are reasonably price...but as long as there are other manufacturers making equal firearms I just won't own one...lol.

no im aware of that comparison.

but these two look identical. the smith and glock look very different from each other, at least as different as two autos could look.

I'm looking to eventually get one but I'm going to let them iron out some early problems. I think there have already been a couple of changes.

They seem to be selling for a premium now, too. I'll wait 6 months and then go shopping.

Looks have little to do with patents, it is the way it is made and the way it functions, the S&W was extremely close to being identical to the Glock in the mechanics. As a matter of fact Glock sued Smith for patent infringement and Smith ended up paying a multi million dollar settlement.

In the end, Smith and Wesson agreed to "remove the surface located below the sear in the Sigma Series Pistols, which Glock contends is a positive guide means, and Glock has agreed that such a modification would resolve the patent infringement claim."

Now on the Kel-Tec and the Ruger you have completely different extractors and what looks to be different disassembly methods/slide retention mechanisms. This is enough to get around Kel_tec's patents.

yes, i had forgotten about the infringement. and you forgot to mention the sigma is a piece of crap, and the glock has basically redifined a generation of autos. :)

i didnt know about the differences. but did kel tech allow ruger to use this design? or did ruger more or less "rip off" kel tech's design and modify it enough to avoid a patent infringement?

Nothing really wrong with the Sigma, it's like Chevy's and Fords, each camp has followers that hate the other and will tell you the opposition is crap...just the way it goes. I can't see Kel-Tec volunteering to give up market share so my guess is Ruger changed enough things to avoid conflict much as NAA did when they created their copy of the Seecamp.

Years of owning a gunshop allowed me to shoot many different firearms and I took advantage of it. I also know several writers and the simple truth is most cannot afford to slam a product, you do that a couple of times and suddenly you have no guns to test. That is the nice thing about many indoor ranges these days, they will allow you to rent a gun and try it yourself. You can try several you are interested in and decide for yourself which suits you the best.

Thanks guys, you are a wealth of info not found elsewhere!!!

Win, any idea where the street prices are now?

The two guns are very similar but the kel-tec is such a poor quality gun compared to the ruger. Kel-tec should have redesigned the p-3at long ago and they would have what ruger has now. I almost bought a p-3at but i could not believe the poor quality of craftsmanship from kel-tec, then i found out that ruger was coming out with the lcp so i bought one, it is way better than the kel-tec, and for only $50 more you can have the ruger.

At the local gunshop up here in Maine, KTP that is, they are listing them for sale for 280.00. They have not been able to get any yet though. I have been a little interested in these also. I had looked into the Keltecs, but they sometimes have real reliability issues plus they just seem very crude in fit and finish. The Ruger looks a little more refined and only lists for about 30.00 more than the Keltecs go for up here. I will wait and see though.
