A friend of mine wanted a modernized version of a Japanese Kogai, so I did my best with a piece of 1084/15N20 twist from our friend Dan Seaver here. Only about 6.5" long and probably not quite 1/8" thick, it's still a formidable last ditch stabbing type weapon(or, letter opener, if you wanna be politically correct). I heat treated the blade at Russ Andrew's shop to include 3 normalizing cycles, a full quench in Park's 50 and three 2 hour tempers(went a bit hotter than for a normal knife blade, as this is meant to be tougher).

Turned out to be a LOT more challenging than I originally thought, as it basically is a double edged dagger, and that's something I've never tried to grind before. Damned if it didn't turn out to be pretty evenly ground. Not gonna get any handle slabs; this one only has holes in case the owner wants to wrap it somehow.

Really neat kozuka type piece to me

Could definately picture some Ivory slabs with a Dragon Fly scrimed or carved in the Ivory

It turned out great..!
I like Joe's ideas too...

That is a beauty! Personally I think mother of pearl handles would look good on it.

Very nice Danbo - that's no easy grinding job and you did it real well. You do need to get over your aversion to handle materials though. :p Some inset ivory scales would be a treat here.

Danbo,

Definitely needs a wrapped handle, you don't want that little bad boy slipping out of your hand when blood starts spurting! :)
