Something different--what patterns/styles/features do you dislike?

I dislike new knives that don't look like they are new old knives.
Don't like serrated blades. Good only for bread, seatbelts and hawser.
Don't like blades over 4 1/2 for folders, go to a fixed blade.
Don't like knives with famous people signature and photo printed on the blade.
Hate knives that come in a big plastic clear container, that sits on a counter, have key chains in a hole and sell for a dollar....

...On this subject, Rough Rider's green bone sets my teeth on edge as well...

What?!
I have the RR congress in green checkered 'gunstock' bone, and I loved it so much I just bought the peanut, which arrived today and is equally nice.
I'm almost ashamed to say it's probably the nicest handle material I have ever seen, and I'm considering collecting all of them, even the patterns I don't really like.

I can't post a photo because of hardware issues, but here's a link to a review:
(I cut through a LOT of cardboard today, and couldn't duplicate the rolled edge that the reviewer experienced on his knife)

I love sunfish/toenail pattern knives, sometimes I like to drop a big cartoon knife in my pocket, and I always smile when I use one. Not for serious edc, but definitely an occasional fun knife.

All you congress and toenail* haters, send 'em to me :)

*as in elephant toenail knives, please do not send actual toenails

I have the RR green gunstock congress, too. Had a trapper, but gave it away. I dig it a lot.

James, I'm good with you liking the RR green bone. I do like their checkered brown bone a lot, but for some reason the green doesn't strike the same cord. I can't really defend my position; it is what it is. I have a smallish RR stockman in their checkered brown bone and it is a sweet knife. In fact, all of the RR knives I have are good knives. My post was to enumerate the things I don't like, not to disparage anyone that does like those particular patterns, features, etc. It's all good, but some of it is not for me.

There's a few things I dislike on slipjoints -

1. Saber ground blades. I like full flat ground or hollow ground. Fortunately the saber grind is not commonly used on slipjoints.
2. Synthetic scales. Make mine with ivory, jigged bone, stag, or wood. I think I have one slipjoint with delrin, and it's my least carried knife.
3. Mismatched scales. I know that natural materials vary from piece to piece, but I think that the scales on a knife should at least look coordinated. For example a knife with heavily ridged stag on one side and plain white on the other is funny looking.
4. Low grade stainless. Carbon steel is good. So are quality stainless steels, 440C and up. But don't waste my time with 420HC, Tru-Sharp, surgical stainless or any other no-name steel. The most important part of a knife is the blade and the steel used should reflect that. I know that not everyone agrees with me, but some steels really are better than others. Why else would Tony Bose specify 154CM on his Case collaborations instead of using Tru-Sharp?

I like most traditional patterns but the things that I really dislike are poor grinds and poor blade mechanics. I'll choose a knife with mismatched scales and gaps but great grinds and perfect mechanics over a "prettier" knife any day... of course, I'd prefer one without any faults at all. There are a few patterns that I do dislike but most of those I don't consider traditional patterns. I do have strong preferences for particular patterns but I appreciate other traditional patterns.

...oh, I do dislike cleaned vintage knives, especially when they are described as "mint".

On traditional slipjoints I don't like:
- more than two blades,
- blades that have similar length and profile (like in Trapper),
- wooden scales,
- 420/440 stainless steel blades,
- absence of bolsters.

Not a fan of knives with identical blades, most especially 4+ bladed congresses with pairs of identical blades on each end. Not that I "dislike" them as their symmetry does have a certain appeal, just not a fan.

Since, I chimed in on this, just wanted to say, I wasn't trying to defend/attack or anything of the like. Everyone has their preferences as this thread shows. I just happen to like the green (didn't think I would initially...I usually like more natural colors). It's the only congress I have, too. Not a big fan of that pattern, but sometimes...

Knife folks. We're strange. :)

Main thing I hate is polished old knives. Keep'm original. I also hate any handle material other than plain micara/g10, ebony, ivory, stag or natural colored jigged bone (with the exception of typical yellow handles). I'll add more later.

This pretty well covers it for me and if there is anything missing find it here:

Yup, that may be the ugliest knife I've ever seen. Is/was that real? Tell me it wasn't.

Don't like plastic handles much. Yellow delrin is okay.
Don't like mother of pearl or any shiny stuff
Dislike stainless steel blades
Dislike excessive pictures or text
Any collectibles are out
Dislike some of the goofy looking shield such as lime or musical instrument etc

It's for real. Difficult to believe, but true - SMKW had them a bit back as a SFO - along with a whole line of blue stag knives with mushroom shields (yes, the Smurf line - though they couldn't use that name of course -- I'm assuming mushrooms were definitely involved in the decision process - some of those picked wild in the mountains). Personally, if I were Case, I'd be hard pressed to make any such things - just as an affront to human dignity -- what little there is left of it.

LOL. Well said. What a waste of materials.

A fellow wood-disliker :D
What is it about wood scales that you don't like?
I tried to explain why I don't like them, but I don't think I did a very good job...

I just reread your post, and realized that I may have offended you.
If I did I'm truly sorry, I most certainly did not intend to criticise you for not liking the RR bone!
It's definitely a matter of personal taste, especially as green is a rather unnatural color for bone.
I think it has a kinda 'art deco' look which I appreciate, but I'm not disparaging you for not agreeing with me.
Differences in opinion is what this thread is all about :)

Before any misunderstandings ensue, this is probably a good time for us to close this thread and move on...(at least I learned for a fact that I'm not the only one that isn't partial to canoes.)
