And wanted to see if you guys can come up with an improvements in the idea.

Here is the latest rendition of my firesteel knife. I'm working with Storl, another BF member to design and sell these. Changes include a set screw in the firesteel cap to allow the end user to change the rod if it wears out. The set screw also locks into a notch in the handle to hold the rod secure. Just twist a 1/4 turn clockwise to release the rod, 1/4 turn counterclockwise to lock it in.

Blade: Flat ground 1/8” O-1, hand sanded to 400 grit
Heat treated by Peters’ Heat Treat to RC 59-60
Handle: Orange G-10 with removable firesteel (ferrocerium rod)
Pins: Stainless Steel
OAL: 8 ½”
Blade (Cutting Edge) Length: 4”

Thank you! Took a lot of work to come up with a working prototype. But now that it's there, I hope to improve on it even more.

As for improvements, I don't know that I can help you there. I like 4" blades, 1/8" stock, O1 steel, utility profiles, flat grinds, orange g10, and large finger choils.

I think you have a winner.

I'm not a fan of blade choils but handle ones are great! Kind of an integrated guard. I like the firesteel idea too. Very innovative.

is the spine squared? i imagine it is, but i figured i should ask.

looks like a pretty cool design that streamlines the package that alot of people seem to like on their belt (firesteel in knife sheath). this also allows for the firesteel to be maintained even if the sheath is somehow lost and you still have the knife (i can't think of any cases, but i guess it could happen)

another idea that just popped into my head is to include a ceramic or diamond stick option in case a person wanted the firesteel on the sheath instead.

i'm interested in seeing what the tang looks like, even though i'm pretty sure i have it pictured correctly in my mind.

how has testing gone?

Neat knife! I looked at the other thread and appreciate seeing a pic with the firesteel out. I think it would be very helpful for us to see a picture with the scales removed. My only concern would be potential weakening by cutting into the tang, but a picture could go a long way to relieve that concern. ;)

Hi Erik, this is another Eric, i really like your knife an think you have a winner there!

i sent you an email with some ideas i had, not improvements, just something may add to an already good knife. I forgot to add though that for better all weather use, could the scales on the handle be checkered for better grip in the rain/cold?

I look forward to your reply of your thoughts of my thoughts... LOL - Eric:thumbup:

Another guy suggested a sharpening rod, so I'll work with Erik to see if we can figure out something to do with that. The tube for the firesteel is 1/4", so it is just a matter of finding one that size or smaller.

As far as testing, I have been using the prototype for a couple of weeks and it has been going really well. This is the third iteration of the firesteel knife, and I think it is a winner. It is a very selfish design, since I worked with Erik for several months to fine tune a knife with exactly what I wanted. :)

I am working on making a video of the knife, and hope to have it up in the next couple of days.

I was giddy when I first received it (seriously). It just feels so good in my hand and looks really slick with the orange G10 handles. Erik's solution to making the firesteel stay in place incorporated an idea we had with the set screw in a very elegant way. The previous prototypes' firesteels did not secure very well, so making it stay in place during abuse was a big deal to me. Erik did a great job in the making of this knife, and I couldn't be happier.

that a great idea. you could grind a small edge somwhere iin the spine to be used as a striker.

I actually sharply square off the spine so you can strike on it (Storl's idea).

Thanks for posting the pics for me! Wow, take a few hours off and look at the activity. Thanks guys!

The butt of the G10 scales are a little rough on the proto, but will be much more refined on future batches that will go out for sale. Because it was a prototype, there was still a little modding that I had to do after assembly. I actually finished out another with green scales for myself (it had some finish defects that were not acceptable for public consumption IMO :D) and finished the scales much cleaner (sorry Storl ). I have also put "cat's eyes" on the firesteel cap using a tritium tube on that one, glows nice a green :D

Anyhow, enough rambling on my part, thank you all for the suggestions, mods and ideas. As a maker, this is the thing we thrive on. Most of all, thank you to Storl for initiating this process!

I really like it, and have never seen anything like it! Sure would work for those fast, light trips with minimal gear. I love stuff that has multiple uses! ;)

The knife has a lot of potential and I'm looking forward to seeing how this knife perofrms. Good luck with it.
