I finally got me a harpoon. Something I've thought about trying for a few years but never got around to it. The head was forged from a chunk of truck leaf spring, shaft was at one time a hay rake tine, and the socket was a piece of a very old two man cross cut saw. It measures 34 1/2".

Now there's something you don't see every day.

Great work Ray.

You need to get with Bruce Bump and see if he can make something for you to shoot that out of. : )

Thats a super nice Harpoon, I think every man should own at least one.
But I got to ask what the heck is the hardy tool under the anvil used for.
Fullering a Blade or what?

Chris, You hit the nail on the head with your guess. Just an idea I had but I need to make a few adjustments before it does what I'm hoping it will do.

I hate to admit this but the fullering tool was the first thing that caught my eye, hay its shiny:D I love the harpoon I have been wanting to try and forge some arrow heads, thought that would be fun.

That thing is what the guys in the west use to catch trout for sturgeon bait. Good job Ray.

Very cool harpoon. Thanks for the links as well--I happen to be listening to Moby Dick on audio book right now so it's cool to see all the tools they speak of.

Very cool Ray! Nice to see you over here again.;)
I have a pic somewhere of some of the harpoons at the shipsmith shop in Old Mystic. I'll see if I can find it.
