Something fishy

I tried to search their sold listings but Ebay only keeps them going back to July and I've had this knife longer than that.
Feedback goes back forever. You could possibly look at the seller's feedback to see if the seller of your knife left feedback and possibly bought the knife from them. It might be easier to go back to your seller's page and look for feedback since the current seller has sold so many items. If the two sellers interacted, I would say that the current seller mixed up the photos. The current seller does a lot of business on ebay so I can see how getting photos mixed up could happen.

What feedback would I be looking for / at ?
The person behind this listing in question, or the one I bought it from ?

Btw I was told they got it from a fellow collector, and if that's true I figure said collector is likely who bought it from this seller.

You could look at both of their feedbacks to see if they interacted. It might be easier to look at your seller’s feedback since the current seller has so much feedback. It is a moot point if your seller bought it from another collector though.

Curiosity got the best of me, so I messaged the seller. Here is our exchange…

Me: Good morning, I am interested in this knife. Just want to confirm, is the knife in the photos the actual knife being auctioned or a sample? Thank you!

soldster (seller): The actual knife.

That's interesting.
It seems they do read their emails, know they don't have the knife pictured ( I sent them pictures as proof ), and have just told you that the knife pictured is the knife you get which is not possible.

Searching his completed or sold listings I found no 1989 Buck, granted there is a limit on how far you can go back on Feedback I believe.

It would have probably been over a year ago, because I bought it in may from somebody who got it from a collector.

They do have an actual website so maybe they sold it there ?

I'd assume so, I mean that clearly has to be recycled photos since yours looks the exact same.

Unless it's truly a snowflake that looks just like yours which I would find very hard to believe in.

I'd email that guy again and ask politely how is it possible, obviously using recycled photos on something like stag would be a deal breaker to anyone who got something slightly or even quite different.

I had sent them another message and just got a reply asking which knife I was talking about.

I sent them another back and will see what they have to say.
I hope I didn't come off as rude and insulting because I'd reallylike to get an answer, but it's kind of hard to be very direct and matter of fact without coming off that way.

I just got this reply from the seller, and as suspected this was an honest mistake They must have once sold this knife as I had concluded.
I assumed they had used the wrong pictures for a different knife, but apparently they just accidentally listed an Item they no longer have and sadly there's 1 less Stag 305 up for sale.

" DUDE YOU ARE RIGHT!!!! Your message was so weird I called my wife, told her
the story, and asked her to go over to our warehouse and pull the knife (we
have a 3000 sq ft warehouse on our property which houses our online
business). (I would go but i am on the road on a knife buying trip). She
called me back and said the knife is not in the NB box where it should be.

Needless to say, i immediately ended the auction.

Now i am trying to figure out how an item we no longer have got launched to
ebay.

For the record, at one time WE DID have that knife, otherwise we would not
have photos of it. Did you buy your knife on ebay? Possibly from us?

It has got to be a weird glitch in our ebay software. I am looking into it,
it will keep me awake all night tonight!

Meanwhile, i can only say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. "

I'm glad this has been resolved, for a potential auction winner and for the seller who could easily have been attacked with bad feedback from a buyer assuming the worst.

BTW I had just gotten a previous message from them about how they'd send a new picture tomorrow proving that they do in fact have it, this was of course before he realized that they didn't.
