I had one of these a long time ago and regretted letting it go. So I saw this one, which is not perfect, but still in pretty good condition considering it's age and I made an offer that was taken. This is the original Al Mar Shiva, handmade by William Harsey in the 1980's. I think he made 40 of these for Al Mar. It is hand signed by both Al Mar and W. Harsey. I have it here next to the Shiva that Al Mar knife company made a long time later, which is similar in design but a good bit smaller. Both have full tapered tangs, a feature you don't see much any longer.

Sweet! I've just been fondling my brown micarta Moki, a perfect personal fighter. The 7" blade of the Harsey is crossing over into utility territory, and it's my understanding that the 5" was considered by Al Mar to be primarily a SD tool.

Mine has the center spot in the Badassery, the first shelf above my computer desk, populated by a variety of factory and hand-made combat/fighting knives.

The Large handmade Shiva is a relatively big and heavy duty knife for SD. If I wanted a 7"+ fighter it would be a Randall #1 or a Terzuola M30A1 which are quicker. As cool as the Smaller knife is seems small and light to me. YMMV.
 
I believe small and light was the whole point, something a gentleman could carry. It doesn't LOOK particularly dangerous, but, in the right hands, is just enough of everything, without too much of anything.

Beautiful design, in either size. Congrats!!!
