Something New from Pugs

Hey your and Ndog started it, I was just following protocol. Just for future reference, what's a don quixote? I don't get out much.

I'm trying to be good really. All this fall guy stuff is getting to me.

I second the singing of Pug's praises (though if I actually DID sing them everyone would flee). My IBBB sheath he made for me gets much love and everyone that sees it wants to know about it. I walked into the local leathershop here (some really good folks too but different focus entirely) for a shoulder holster not long after I received it from Pugs and happened to be wearing it. They were blown away with the craftsmanship, I didn't have the heart to tell them how much I paid for it, but their estimates were much more. And they are VERY reasonable for their work so that just confirmed what I already knew. I got a great deal as well as a piece of very well made wearable art from Pugs.

indeed pugs is more than fair -- and bawanna

don quixote is a fictional famous literary crazy man; he thought he was a knight and ran around spain attacking "monsters"that did not exist; there are books and movies written about him, a pretty cool dude, you should check him out.

Fictional famous literary crazy man? Drop the famous part and the book would be about me dude. And those monsters are no joke let me tell ya.

Gehazi,
Thank you for the kind words, I am very happy you like it, it was a very fun project and I really like how it came out, I hope it serves you well.

Shavru,
Thank you as well, I guess im gonna have to up my prices :D, kidding of course but for the carving I definitely have to bump it up some as it takes some time to do. Sometimes the prices scare people away, but if you knew the hours put in to a true custom sheath it is not much in the end, and I do this as a hobby so I try to stay fair.

And Bawanna, who is this Don guy??????

duH?

If you charged enough to make a wage nobody would buy them. Everyone would still want one but nobody would buy. Well rich folks would buy.

I too keep it a hobby, have no intention of making it a business, and don't see anything close to wealth in my future.
So it's important to keep it fun, keep it a hobby status and do it for yourself and for your friends.
No schedule, do it when your mind is right and keep your day job, I know you gave up that part (lucky).

Oh by the way I got 6 knives enroute, should be there tomorrow, I'll let you know what I want. I'd like em back by Thursday if it isnt too much trouble.

I wish you would make your wood checkering a business, I have a bunch of knives but I cant trade them all for checkering

I didn't say I wouldn't checker for you. I'm happy to and you sure don't need to send me no more coveted collectable knives. I take cars, guns, pickups, most anything. Just tugging your chain don't cha know.

I just said I don't plan on getting rich at it. Trading isn't a bad thing, time for stuff. Stuff I seem to hang onto, money and me never stay together very long. (I'm married and have kids).

I know Pugs has done well with this school of thought as well. Doing something for stuff.

I've done countless checkering and grip making for nothing. If it's fun for me and it's for friends, it's not a lost cause. Even people I don't know who ask, I don't charge. I make them, send them and let them decide how much to send.
My usual advise is if your rich send a lot, if your not rich, don't send so much. If you like em but you got no loot enjoy with my compliments.

I hesitate to even write that on account of there are those who would take advantage but I don't think we have any of those type here.

In my case a person just can't checker fast enough to make it lucrative but I enjoys it so we carry on.

LOL I know who he is silly was just busting on ya, I hear you on the hobby, and I take in just enough to not make it a burden. And you know I like to barter, cash trade or both works sometimes. Oh and guess what, I actually got a job man that retirement stuff is not for me, plus im too young, this is right up your ally, I work at a gun shop and its killing me I want everything, so I guess ill never take any cash home!!!

Now your trying to make me look dumb, I didn't know who he was till Sir Gehazi told me. I heard of him but didn't know who he was. Maybe we were twins.

I worked (for free, on the job training) for a month at a gunshop when I first got hurt. I sold a ton of guns and built quite a clientele for the shop. I never would have made a dime and I didnt like the way the owner ran the place. Ran it like a used car lot. Sales quota's, commissions, just sell don't try to figure out a persons needs, abilities.
Also didn't want a lot of inventory. Find what they want and we'll order.

He let me go after a month. Guy he replaced me with only lasted one day. I still chuckle.. Being deaf it was really frustrating too. Oh well..............

you guys are real talent and i feel really special for knowing you +++ ass kissing to stop in 3..2...(srsly i love this place, you guys rock, is enriching to be here)

Yes, I can see where making a business out of woodwork or leather bending or knifemaking would be very tough these days. Many of us appreciate the fine hand crafted work. But a lot of people don't understand why it is so much more expensive than a machine made holster ect until you lay it out in a nice neat line for them. I think really most people don't comprehend just how many hours it takes to make these things. You can't just knock out 10 sets of checkered 1911 grips before lunch or a dozen knife sheaths "first thing in the morning". I know I have been surprised a couple times when thngs I thought looked really simple then someone explained to me what all was really involved. I know the prices didn't scare me off. But occasionally I have had to be very patient while I acquired the funds.

BTW, Hello, My name is Sancho Panza I will feed and water your 4-wheeled stead "Rocinante" Senor Don Bawanna :D

I have no idea what you just said, I don't speak Finnish but it sure sounded good!

I always laugh at the gun catalogs. 1911 grips 35 bucks add checkering 5 bucks?

Power checkering a person could probably checker a set in less than 10 minutes once you get accustomed to the machine, it's a one pass and your done deal. You still have to know how etc but its wicked fast. The machine is also wicked expensive and the replacement cutters too but I hear they last a long time. Never run one, would like to try just for grins.

I'll spend 6 to 8 hours on a set doing by hand. 5 bucks! Easy money. Heck that's almost 80 cents an hour, less too wear etc.

A normal sheath for me takes about 8 to 12 hours total time and a more intricate ones hours and hours more. Each one starts with a template cut from your own blade, and too many steps in between to mention but twords the end it all gets hand stitched, yes hand stitched which can take 2 hours plus, and then final finishing. I am my own worst critic of my work, I always sweat when I send pics of the finished product and until its back with you I worry its not good enough, when I get the notice that you have it and like it, that's when im good with it. It's all for the love of the craft.

you are not really doing a bad thing here for your market saying those things, either of you :O-- hours spent= spirit of the object

I know my momma always says she found me under a rock and often times thought about just putting me back but I think me and Pugs are twins separated at birth. He got the smarts and I got the natural good looks and chick magnetism.

I sweat too until the package arrives. Grips not quite as bad cause I can always start over. Checkering somebodies own grips is a little more skeery and of course bowie handles I sweat gallons. Where am I gonna find a water buffalo to saw the horns off from if I screw up ya know.

I started out checkering rifle stocks. Now that's skeery stuff. Guy brings over grandpas 416 Whistlepoop Magnum and wants me to whittle on it. Some I talked em out of doing it, just to risky and you just don't want to mess with grandpa's.

Love of the craft, that's a good way of putting it.

Lol you crack me up man, were like the movie Twins separated at birth and found each other later in life, but one issue here. Who is Arnold Schwarzenegger and who is Danny Devito??????? That is the question

all I gotta say is you guys need to get a reasonable price list ready because I can't think of a knife of mine that does not need the checker master and the leather bender-- but , I cannot trade my entire collection to get said collection checkered and leather'd-- soooooo; hook a bro up with some hourly prices for all that stuff; and pugs you should not charge anyone practice prices-- your practice is over, I dub ye journeyman leather picture maker.

Can't help ya on that Schwarznagger or Devito, sounds like they might be from Ohio though, just a guess.

Sir Gehazi you start prioritizing what you want whittled on and we're ready to whittle when your ready. Winter time is the best whitttling time anyhow. Rainy days are bench days and bench days are good.

I gotta finish up batch numero uno first though, almost there.
