Most have seen the very clean and innovative work of Rick Hinderer over many years now, but recently Rick took the plunge and acquiesced to us Balisong nuts, producing 7 Balsiongs to date.

I just received this piece from EDC Knives, and couldn't be more pleased with the piece stem to stern. Truly quality workmanship and Rick is such a pleasure to know and do business with.

The knife is called the "Fire Whirl" in keeping with Rick's tradition of names with hot stuff associated. :)

A few stats on the piece, and yes it does come with an extinguisher, but what a killer on shipping costs! :p

The handles are milled 5/8" round stock 303 Stainless, hand rubbed to 400 grit and fitted with CNC'd carbon fiber interframe inlays. As clean as it gets!

Screw stock includes 2-56 button-heads for the latch mechanism (T-6).., and 6-32 button-heads at the pivots (T-8), accomodated by a 440C barrel Rick turned himself. The washers are Nylatron.

Very nice profiling job on the Fire Whirl, and the blade is CPM S30V, hand rubbed to 400 grit on the flats, and a Scotch-Brite wheel on the grinds.

Rick used an 8" contact wheel for all profiling, and grinds free hand on a Bader III. The last 13/16" at the tip is sharpened on top also, giving the knife pure stabbing ability, but tappering perfectly to ensure tip integrity. Very nicely done. A truly utilitarian profile.

The tang pin is heat treated 416.., peened prior to press fitting. Just an outstanding job for a first run of custom Balisongs. This one pictured is #2.

I especially like the top line of this Balisong, and Rick does collect them himself, so he definitely did his homework, the piece really moves nicely at 7.1 ounces, much in the tradition of the old B-S, USA, PCC, and BM customs, but a tad lighter.

I tried to catch a macro shot and just missed on the tip, but I made the attempt... :)

I rarely comment on latch designs because I do like latchless Balisongs as a preference, but Rick really nailed the latch on this knife. Simply flawless, which is not always the case even with custom made knives of this design. Both closed and open the latch performs like a dream, snapping solidly into place, but also easy to disengage.

Rick also did a nice knurled touch with a checkering file on the end of the latch for easy indexing.., great idea!

Another look...

Great pic's Pete. I see you've expanded into "mood lighting".

And kudo's to Rick for pulling off such an excellent first effort.

BTW: You suck!!! :D

I love the checkering on the latch. That's great.

Nice pictures too.

by the way awesome balisong nice grind work.

Wow, that's a pretty nice bali, i also think the latch is pretty sweet. Nice blade profile, and good looking bali overall.

Happy flipping.

Damn that Rick Hinderer. He is a bastard person and I hate him.

Rick does such great work. It makes me want to break the law and carry a Bali in Caulyfornia( New gov. New pronuciation). Of Course I'd settle for a bali in cali;)

Pete, I have never said this before and this is the first time.

You Suck!

Of course you understand this is an utmost form of flaterery.

Very nice bali. Congrats.

That sure is a beauty. Hard to believe its Mr. Hinderer's first bali effort. Very nice piece.

Thanks Tony. The "mood lighting" was supposed to be a darkened exposure so you couldn't tell how much damage we did to your proto...:) Joey and I never would have thrown your knife for "beta-testing" if we realized it's significance. Thank God for power hammers huh? Took the dings right out...

Actually Dave, you've told me so many times that I suck, I may need therapy to restore my self-worth...lol.

Tom, the folks in Bali-Ville were thinking you need to -MAKE-a few :)..., not -OWN- any...

Dang Pete, that's a beautifully ground blade. In fact that whole knife looks to be just about perfectly made.

Keith.., even though this isn't your favorite of knife designs, you are always gracious enough to comment and give credit to makers. Thanks :).., very classy!

Wow it does look like the 42-01. Amazing.

Did you plan it like that or did it simply come out that way?

The disadvantage to me collecting Bowies is that you can't get one in a pocketknife version.:D

This may be a real stupid comparison, but this knife's blade geometry kind of reminds me of a little Bowie style blade.

I have always wanted to have a Balisong, but I never could find the exact blade style and handle configuration I would commit to buying.

I would like to have a knife like this. Outstanding!

"Dum-di-dum, I'm making a balisong..."
*Sound of grinding and cutting and molding*
"Wow, it accidentally looks a lot like the BM42-01! What are the odds of that..."

I don't think so. It's pretty obvious Mr. Hinderer has been influented by a certain knife. :D

But it turned out VERY well, and I'm VERY sorry I missed out on it. :grumpy:

Great pictures, too, Pete. You both deserve...a big, nice "YOU SUCK" stampled on your foreheads. :D

I just tried to contact Rick at a phone number listed in the 23rd Annual Knives 2003 book.
I kept getting a fax signal after a couple rings.

Does someone have other contact info?
