Something occurred to me... agree/disagree?

I must have been around 14 years old 1972-73 when my friend was using his old timer 34ot to loosen a phillips head screw and broke the tip. I was horrified and decided then to get a multi tool for just such a chore.

I got a decent one from the hardware store that was the pliers style in a nylon sheath. It was about 4 inches folded and had a knife blade, screw drivers and opener. Kinda clunky but It came in handy many times over a couple years before I lost it. Even a cheap multi tool is better than using a good pocket knife for screws, prying or opening a tin can.
You could buy a Leatherman style of multi tool in 1973? Interesting, I had no idea they were around then.

No. It wasn’t near the quality or design of a leatherman. It was similar to a cheap import that is half pliers and half scout pocket knife. I didn’t trust the pliers to any force they were small and not sturdy. Very light duty but the screw drivers worked well for occasional use. I used the can/bottle opener more than the other tools. The knife blade was a good scraper.

Thanks for the explanation. 👍😀

I received a very nasty cut on my index finger when a trapper’s spey blade folded on my finger while I was prying with it. It was pure laziness; I had plenty of more suitable tools nearby, but I didn’t feel like walking across the room and opening a drawer in the tool chest. After that painful lesson, I only use non-locking blades for cutting.

Your lesson was a bit more painful than mine.

I was a kid, and I was prying open the lid of a small can of powdered hot cocoa for a cup. Of course of was using my little pocket knife. The old man comes through the kitchen and sees what I'd doing and gives me a good back of the head slap.

"It's a knife, bonehead! use a spoon!"

From then on, every time I went to abuse a pocket knife in some way, I swear I could hear the old man's voice; It's a knife, bonehead!"

I never abused another knife, and I carry a SAK with a screw driver, or at least have my old Sear's 4-way keychain screw driver in my wallet.
