well i live in san antonio...and theres a silly law that says i cant carry a lock blade...so me being who i am...im gunna follow it even though it really isnt enforced....so can yall suggest something awesome lookin that doesnt lock for about $40?

There are tons of traditional knives with cool scale materials that you can get in the neighborhood of $40. Is that something you'd be open to, or are you looking for a more "modern" non-locking folder (e.g., the Spyderco UKPK)?

Anything that's a slipjoint is recommended. On your price point there are many a bucks that'll fit the the bill. Also check case and shrade. A stockman is good or a victorinox. Can't beat a swims army knife

Edit: there aren't many "new school" looking slipjoints. Since its a traditional style

something more modern...maybe even tactical in nature...i mean i can carry a fixed blade though...which is so wierd...if i cant find anything fitting ill prolly just do like a cs double agent or something like that

Non-locking + tactical?!

I saw a guy on here took a CRKT M-16 frame and turned it into a friction lock, that's the closest thing I can think of.

If fixed blades are no issue, I'd stick with them and a nice sheath.

lol i guess thats a no then...i was prolly gunna do like a cs double agent or like a kershaw millitary knife or some kind of other small fixed blade

Yeah, I'd say go with a fixed blade. There aren't very many modern-looking non-locking folders out there, with nearly all of the ones that are made being Spydercos (the various UKPKs/Urbans/etc. plus the Spyderco Terzuola). And even if the bulk of those weren't above the price range you're looking at, you'd be hard-pressed to find any that are very "tactical"-looking. By contrast, you'll have a much wider wider range of choices in terms of designs, brands, and so forth among fixed blades at that same price point.

Hi Joseph -

Spyderco Slipits were designed just for you.

They are nice.
I have Boker XS, also very nice and worth considering:

Traditional slipjoints are a possibility, as well as SAKs. Personally, I find I get more utility out of the SAKs. Neither are particularly unique though. You could go for an Opinel No. 5. That has no locking mechanism (the No. 6 and larger do), and it's somewhat unique by virtue of not as many people carrying them. They look kinda cool too (at least I think so).

Ok well since u can carry a fixed blade why not? An izula or bk11 of 14 or a custom edc will fit the bill. My guess is that your laws are designed to protect against large concealed knives, aka tactical folders. One of the fixed blades above, slipped into the sheath and into you pocket wont print you too bad and will be readily available. Even faster than any slipjoint which requires two hand open most of the time.

Just wondering, does Texas have a concealed firearm permit or concealed weapon permit? You might be able to just get a permit and sole the problem.

To your question, the Spyderco Terzoula is a very nice knife. I bought one for a trip to NYC and it seemed almost as safe as a locking knife. Great fit and finish as well.

Yes, Texas has CHL's.

The silly law the OP is referring to, is in San Antonio only (city ordinance) as it was adopted to try and curtail the gang violence there. I don't live in SA but from what I have read it isn't strictly enforced but is considered a class C misdemeanor.

Would a balisong be ok in SA-Tx ?

Otherwise the higonokami / Svord Peasant extended tang makes for a very solid nonlocking folder. They're just not very sexy.

Balisongs are considered gravity knives in Texas and are illegal. That is a state law.

I wouldnt take the chance on getting caught carrying one. Autos are illegal to carry here as well.

Look up Michael Morris. He makes some really cool friction folders, which are non-locking, one-hand-opening, and can have pocket clips. Reasonably priced, too, or so I hear.

Buy a katana and rig it for over the shoulder & across the back carry.
