Sometimes I wish my 0550 had a hole.

I sold my two 0550s a few months ago, and later bought an SNG. Really liked the SNG, but realized it reminded me of the 0550 in a lot of ways, and that I'd rather have the $175ish knife over the $375ish knife, so I sold the Strider and bought another 0550. I think it was a great decision. But...
Sometimes I wish the 0550 had a spydie hole similar to the SNG. The detent is light enough that I can open it by lightly pinching the blade with my thumb and middle finger, but not quite with just my thumb. I know it has thumbstuds, but there's just something about the spydie hole. Side note, I kinda hate Spydercos.
I thought about using a drill press to just drill a small hole by the edge of the ZT logo, not too big, just enough to catch my thumb. But I'd be really mad if it didn't turn out.
Anybody ever done this?

Watch out bro....what you just said is borderline sacrilegious lol (I would buy it though)

I don't think the hole would be big enough to get any leverage. Could be wrong. I think it is all a out personal preference. I like the thumb studs myself. All I can say is go for it if you think it would work.

Fictoid: Spydeco saves 3.8 million dollars a year by taking all of the round slugs punched out of the blades and melting/reusing the metals.

PS: a fictoid is a fictional fact.

Slide your thumb upwards and not outwards and the 0550 should open up, no problem.

I just got one too and despite everyone saying how hard it is to open, I can actually just flick it open without ever touching the blade. Is that strange?

I wasn't saying that I have trouble opening it with the studs, quite the contrary.
I just meant that I really liked the way the SNG opened with the hole, and I think the 0550 would be sweet with a hole, too.
Or maybe a bigger version of the Mnandi thumb nick!!

The 550 is great as is. Mine opens real nice with just the stud. Spydie holes are OK I guess. I have a few Spydies. But even on them all I can think of is how much nicer the blade would be without the big hole in it.

Opening holes are so much better than thumbstuds! Would love to see a Kershaw/zt with a spydie hole!

Just bought a 0550, it should be here tomorrow. And that 0301 mod looks very cool...I think you should do it and post pictures.

Isn't it the stiff detent that is causing this problem?

Won't pulling the lockbar the opposite direction release the pressure on te detent???
Strong detents are nice for flippers. But not for the 0550 or other manual thumbstud opening knife.

No, the detent is actually very light on mine.
What I'm saying is that I can almost open it by pushing out on the blade (not the thumbstud) to the left of the ZT logo where a thumbhole would typically be. Like on an SNG.
I think it would be cool with an oval hole just like the one on an SNG.

I here you. I never used my 551 for the same reason - no hole and no flipper. I have a few Benchmades that are sitting on the shelf NIB for years for the same reason but the same model with the hole got pocket time.
