For a long time I've kept buying knives that were great pieces, but there was always something about the blade design, the steel, or some other attribute that I wanted designed differently. So, I am wanting to get into making my own knives.

I am not looking to build a knife from scratch. I am planning on buying steel blanks(mostly in S30V), shape them to my own specifications, and have someone else do the heat treatment.

So, I was hoping that some of you that have made your own can give me any advice on this topic. The tools I will be using are a heavy vice to hold the piece in place, cutting saws to form the shape of the piece, and using files and diamond bench stones to shape the blade into its final form. I don't want to use power grinders. After that I plan to ship it to someone who can perform the heat treatment on the blade. Then I'll likely use micarta or G10 scales for the handle.

I'm sure it is nowwhere near this simple, but for you experts out there I was hoping you could help me along. Any recommondations on sources for small quantities of S30V steel? How about somebody knows what they are doing in heat treating a S30V blade? Thank you in advance.
