My son will commision in May and am looking for ideas for a cool gift to commemorate the occasion. I already bought him the traditional Marine version of the fixed blade Ka-Bar so thinking maybe a higher end folder?

Or another fixed?

Ideas please! Thanks for the advice in advance!

Go get him a Busse SFNO or A Ratmandu! :D

Tell you're son I thank him for his service.

I agree with your thought on a folder, which he can carry with him all the time and carry the sentiment. Depending on your budget, a ZT 0550, or a Strider, or a Sebenza (Large or Small depending on his hand size). They will work in hostile areas or a night on the town.

Go Army :)

An Emerson Commander for a folder sounds good. Or some Busse Knife in OD Green. A TGLB maybe?

Are you thinking he might carry it on a deployment, or just a keepsake? If it's going to be a user then how about the Benchmade Adamas (comes in both a folder and fixed)? There are a lot of high end options for keepsakes.

I think something he can use, depend on, be proud to own and have a story with every scratch... He is currently tracked to be an Aviator if that affects your inputs!

Strider SMF or Sng Lego, Emerson Commander. Both Emerson and Strider are known to go out of their way to get knives in the hands of out armed forces and both company's are US made with some of the best warranties in the Biz. I would lean twards the SMF since it was developed for the Marine Corps orgianialy.

" The Strider MARSOC SMF is a framelock folding knife that was specifically developed for Detachment 1, the first SOCOM unit of the United States Marine Corps. The Strider SMF was the first knife issued to an individual Marine Corps unit in over 60 years and the first tactical folder issued within the USMC."

Not that he would use it, but does he have his Officer's sword? He will need for for certain formal occasions with his dress uniform and it will not be an issue item. It will however, be something he will proudly own for a long, long time.

One of my Best friends from high School is a Officer in the Marine Corps and for the first few years he had to rent a sword for formal outing because the cost of the officers sword was so much. I think when he was all said and done when he bought his sword he paid over 1800 for it but that was for engraving and a real pearl handle and 24k gold guard and mounting, and a hard storage case. its actually a really nice piece somthing that he is very proud of. The Marine's have the best looking Dress uniforms but they pay alot for them.

if you wanna get him something super useful, get him a leatherman charge ti. He will get tons of use out of that. Or the Wave, which is a little cheaper and has all the same stuff. Otherwise, Spy, Delica or Endura would be good. The new Kershaw 1 ton is a lot of knife for the money. I would steer away from expensive, since there is a good chance of loosing it or getting it stolen.

I'm a Marine Officer and pilot, for the first part of his training (TBS) a multitool would get the most use. I used a leatherman skeletool at tbs and I was happy to find that it also fit in the shroud cutter pocket of my flight suit later on. These days (as an attack pilot) I get the most use out of either a delica or caly 3.5 because they fit in that same pocket. I also carry a Vic pioneer for the screwdriver. I use it to open panels on aircraft during preflight. There is not much opportunity to carry a fixed blade as a pilot with limited room in the cockpit and on your vest.

For the field take a look at the Ontario Afghan....US made, thick as a brick for prying and super rugged. Priced at about $75-100 depending upon which one you select. For every day carry I'd try a folder such as the Zero Tolerance 0350. Again, US made and it's in a nice size for many cutting jobs. They also make a 0300 that is a little larger. Prices range is at about $100-150. Both are sturdy and would serve him well as a Marine.

Semper Fidelis!!

Good points. I always seem to forget that the Marine Corps has it's own air wings. I always think of the Marines as a ground force but they're a force in the air as well!

How about contacting Hinderer and getting a XM-18 or 24. Do they not gear those specifically towards those who serve and offer reasonable pricing if you are in

the service or law enforcement?

I thank your son for his courage and service.

I would say get him a nice folder, something tuff and reliable. Stay away from the fixed blades it probably will never be used. I was infantry in the corps and almost never used my big fixed blade knife. So I really doubt a pilot will. A good folder he will be able to use and maybe pass on to his children. Leathermans multitools are good for military guys but it sounds like you want to get him something nice, and im sure he can pick up one of thoose cheap at the px.

I would get him a good folder to go with his fixed blade.
I would suggest a Strider SNG or SMF. Or if that's too high in price check out the ZT 0550 or 0560.
Maybe a DPX H.E.S.T. 2.0 folder?
