If you get him a folder, a lot of bases+ships have a 3" rule regarding blade length. It's rarely enforced, but I have seen people face disciplinary action in the past for 4" blades. If you want him to have a worry free, carry anywhere folder, keep the blade to 3":thumbup: Just out of curiosity, what's job will he be doing in the marines (not sure if it's called an MOS for officers...).
 
Buy him his sword. He can tell his kids about that someday. A knife will never be that memorable.
