Sorry edges on Buck/Mayo TNT's

I ordered a Buck/Mayo TNT from one of the dealers that advertises here on BF. It didn't take much inspection to notice that the edge grind was terribly uneven. I've never bought a new knife, in any price class, that was that bad. So I exchanged the knife (Don't worry, that part of this story will go up on GB&U after it plays out). While the grind on the "new" knife was better, it still isn't anywhere close to what I would consider acceptable.:barf:

So, did I get two lemons or is this "normal" for this model?

Tony

Mine was and is great. Even grinds, Nice finish. I've really been impressed. My Buck-Mayo has set the standard for what I expect from a production knife.

That was what I expected from a knife costing this much. And everything but the grind is what I expected. I guess I'll contact Buck's warranty department and see about getting this taken care of.

Purchasing a knife of this reputation and expense should be a joy, but so far, it has been nothing but a pain in the butt.:(

Sorry to hear about your problems. I know what a pain dealing those kinds of issues can be. But my experience hasn't been with Buck! :D

I own a Buck/Mayo that is as close to perfect out of the box as anything I have ever seen. That includes a very sharp blade with even grinds. Fit and finish is top-notch. The lock is solid and tight. There is zero blade play either open or closed.

I wear this knife often, and am proud to do so. It is a great collaboration.

Good luck!

Thanks, but I've decided to just send it back for a refund. I'm just PO'd about the whole affair. The vendor admittedly took the first one out of the box to photograph it and didn't notice the problem. However, upon return he said that it wasn't very good (I did get his assurance that he wouldn't re-sell it). Then to send another open box item that is only fractionly better (the grind on belly is only half that as the straight portion of the blade) is just plain disappointing.

Once I get all of the e-mails together (some are at work), I'm going to write the whole mess up in GB&U for commentary by the BF community.

Having said that, Buck should not have let these two specimens out the door. To all you folks who have exquisite examples, how long ago did you aquire your knives?

Thanks folks,
Tony

I would not have sent it to the vendor, I would have let Buck fix the knife up, because those ones are not the norm when it comes to the quality of this knife. Buck has done a good job overall with their first high end framelock(their first framelock period).

I dont mean to be rude, but there were several threads regarding the Buckmayo. There were some issues such as yours and some others. Buck encourages anyone with a problem to send the knife in and they will make it right. They took action to correct the defects in the original batch and have made many repairs.
IMNSHO the GBU is for praise or Chronic problems and would serve no real value as to a well known issue.
I feel bad that this has left you with bad feelings and I hope your next purchase will be more enjoyable.

No, you're not rude. I didn't check the threads - my bad. My GB&U write-up will not be about Buck, but the vendor. Which is too bad, as he has a sterling rep from what I can tell. But when I told him about how bad knife #1 was, he said send it back and he would send another one. He did, but it was only marginally better than the first. That's where my real beef is. In my defense, knife #1 was so bad, it would have had to have a *ton* of grinding to get right and I don't think a new knife should require having 1/16" taken off to make right.

Right now, my decision is to send it back for a refund and I've so told the vendor.

It was a $15 lesson hard learned ($7.50 x 2 insured postage for returns).

What's ironic is that I ordered the Buck/Mayo on the same day that I ordered the D2 bladed Griptillian. They arrived within a few days of each other and the $65 Mini-grip has a near perfect edge (ain't nothin' perfect! :) ).

Tony

Tony, glad you like the Griptillian , I've heard its a real good knife. Lots of folks here like the D2 steel. I've followed the Buckmayo since it hit the market and Iknow what you're talking about with the grind.(no defense needed on your part) Unfortunatly, sometimes the vendors have such confidence in their products that they forget the occasional bad apples that come up from their stock. The manufacturers only spot check finished products.(by their own admissions)
With Buck, Just send it to them and they will make it right, even if they have to replace the blade or entire knife. I've never sent a Buck back to the vendor and have always received great service from Buck.
Your calm demeanor also speaks well. You are unhappy, but are listening to other opinions.
Enjoy your Grip and give Buck and your dealer another chance.
take care,

Guy, thanks for the advice. While I don't often change my mind (just ask my wife :D ), I sometimes do after (1) thinking things over or (2) getting more info.

So, here are my thoughts on why I should keep it:
1. I've liked framelocks ever since I got a Pinnacle.
2. Other than the edge, the Buck/Mayo seems to be an excellent knife.
3. BF forum members rarely steer other members wrong.

Why I should send it back:
1. I was damned PO'd.

Three against one (and the one is pretty weak!); the knife goes back to Buck as soon as I can arrange an RMA or whatever I need to do. Then I can start using what should be a really nice knife.

Thanks for the clarity, folks.

Tony

PS - Should I ask for anyone in particular if I call or e-mail? Benchmade has Angie and Spyderco has Mike.

And I'm going to blow off the GB&U entry. The vendor in question has a great rep. This is probably a one-time brain fart. Plus, I'm not quite so hot under the collar anymore. ;)

Tony, if you like the overall knife and see potential in it now that you have handled it,then its worth it to send in and get the blade squared away. If the overall appeal is not there then return it for the refund you mentioned.
Joe Houser is our contact at Buck. His email is jhouser@buckknives.com
All you have to do is send the knife to BKI,1900 Weld Blvd,EL Cajon, Ca. 92020.(do not address to Buck Knives, Use BKI AND insure knife if using USPS)
Enclose a note explaining the problem and Efrin will take care of it.I dont claim to know alot about alot of knives, but I own over 100 Buck knives and have sent in my fair share for warranty and other reasons such as blade update offers, etc.and their service is the best!!:)

Thanks Guy,
I'll do just that and post when it comes back from Buck.

And thanks to the other Forumites who have offered advice!

I have a buck/mayo and it's pretty much as good as i expected it to be. It's good enough to share a spot in my EDC rotation along with a Sebenza a some others. However, i've heard a lot of QC problems regarding the buck mayo and imo this shouldn't be happening with a 200 dollar knife, especially from a company as big as Buck. However in their defense i believe this is the first time they've worked with a Ti framelock so i guess they had some difficulties. I just hope the supposed buck strider ti framelocks will have more consistent QC

I forgot to add that Bucks turn around is mostly under 3 weeks and alot at 2 weeks. Yes , post the results! Remember... Griptillian in one pocket and the Buckmayo in the other! LOL

I've got some pics of both knives, but I don't have posting privilages. The pic of the second blade came out the best, as far as showing the constantly changing angle of the grind. If someone can post, I'd be glad to send it to them.

Here are the pictures.

I hope! This is my first time doing this!

Don't know why, but the server will not allow me to post the pictures.
