:o I have a somewhat simple question but cant seem to find the right answer.
Ill just go ahead and ask it without a long explanation of WHY Im asking it.

Dang Im not sure how to ask this properly but would 5160 outperform 1084 with a backyard HT?

I have a paint can forge with a weed burner (Goo style) and a 4 gallon tank of veg oil,and
the last two knives I made and HT'd in this way from 1084 exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds.

I love 1084 now (because I was actually able to do something with it) but is it even worth experimenting with other basic steels this early in the game or am I chasing shadows?

Thanks guys.

HAHAHA!, I just realized who "Count" is... I kept looking for somebody from Transylvania.

If you're getting good results from 1084 and your HT set-up, I would advise sticking with it and focusing on better grinds, more comfortable handles, fit and finish, stuff like that... before worrying about more complex steels and HT protocols. 1084 makes a very good knife :)

Backyard HT = 1084 Period

If you like your backyard HT you can keep your backyard HT, period!

Thanks everyone for the responses. Since I am just a hobby maker, I dont plan on ever selling any knives but I still want my gifts to friends and family (and myself :D ) to be the best I can possibly produce with the limited funds I have. Thanks to everyone here,I have found something that works (for me) so I will stick with that and just try to improve on what I already know I can do.
