No, this doesn't belong in the Pirate's Cove. This is a whistle picture thread. We did some testing this past weekend with a variety of whistles at the WLC. I don't want to release the results just yet but lets just say whistles beat yelling. I registered 110 db then 107 then 105. Whistles were consistent and a great way to signal.

Post your pictures!

No pics but I do have one like the yellow and one very similiar to the orange one on the far right by the black one.

I don't think I have any pics of mine but it is a Jet Scream the same as this....

Hey Pit,

Have you ever given that whistle a blow. I have one and it is suprisingly low!

I was wondering if its maybe a defect.

Mine hurts your ears if you stand too close, is yours not loud at all ?

No not really, I pretty sure I left it at the W.L.C. with Kev. ( Kev refresh my memmory please.)

It must be defective or I really have to quite smoking:o

I don't think it's a defect. They (manufacturers) claim that it will "out-shriek any other noise." I've read a few reviews and it scored quite well. I have one myself and it makes quite a loud noise, although I agree with you that it is surprisingly low and have never tested it against other whistles myself.

we heard the whistles going and then kevin hollering...we all thought kevin dropped something on his foot or something.

he was pretty loud, but it wasn't as noticeable from where i was standing as the whistles were.

also after those three trials he woke up the next day and couldn't talk...

just goes to show whistles really are better.

i'm interested in seeing the numbers, i didn't think to ask when everyone was around.

So wait, let me get this straight.

Marty and Kevin wander off into the woods together, you all hear Kevin screaming, and then you believe his story about testing whistles?

I have a Fox 40 Micro exactly like the yellow one on your string. How do they compare to the others on your string?

I'm suprized Marty wasn't screaming. You can't leave Kevin in the woods too long. Even The Mullein isn't safe:eek:

Rock stars have phallic guitars to rock out with. I have Mullein! The details of the test will be coming soon. Keep posted.

Nice assortment.

I've owned/used:
the small fox 40 (white in the pic)
Classic fox 40 (orange)
Acme thunderer (chrome) Might not be exactly what you have, but it's the basic stainless & cork pea whistle
Storm (black)
In my experience, the storm was the best option, and my go-to whistle when patrons at my beach (I lifeguarded for 5 years) wouldn't pay attention to my/my coworkers fox 40.

Another thing to look at is whether the whistles work while wet/ immediately after a dunk.

The fox 40 will not work underwater, though it is quick to clear the water & begin working
Acme thunderer needs to dry out for a while & be drained before it will work properly.
Storm works underwater (!!) though not loudly. It clears with one blast & works as it should from then on as well.

I have my Grandfather's old whistle that he used to train his Golden Retrievers. It is a heavy-duty black plastic whistle that looks like your standard gym whistle with a cork pea, but this one has no pea whatsoever. Still, it is as loud as, if not louder than, any whistle I have ever heard.

I've got a couple. I like the Fox 40 for my PSK, and have another GITD one in my ruck.

That old school police whistle you have there also gives a pretty good honk. :D

I carry a Fox 40 with my SAR gear and have had no problems when in deep heavy woods being heard with it. No we are not lost. We use whistles when we need to track in on on another team. It beats yelling which we do enough of when looking for someone and are calling out thier name.

I'm curious to see the resluts also.
