I'm sure I'm not the only one looking for 3/16" thick 1075, 1080, 1095 etc bar stock - are there any good sources?

I want to avoid stuff that's sheared.

thanks!

Most all suppliers sell CRA and HRA bar stock.
Out of curiosity, what is your reason for disliking sheared stock?
Stacy

thanks everyone.

Will: I sent an email to aldo earlier this week. No reply yet.

Stacy: I have been on an exhausting search for cold-rolled medium/high carbon steel square, bar, and hex for the past 6 weeks. I've found plenty of people who list it on their websites, but the only ones who have it (and it's square-only) are MSC, McMaster Carr, and Philadelphia Steel Company. No hex. Plenty of precision ground, plenty of 1018, in any shape I want, but no high carbon. Metric Metals has everything as well. If you know for a fact of one place that has high carbon (say 1075 +) in bar form, please let me know! (Sorry, I did say "10XX" in my original post; I assumed that would be interpreted to mean 1050 or better).

I don't want sheared b/c of the twisting. I have access to a shear; I'll buy a 48" x 18" piece from McMaster Carr and shear it myself, if that is all I can find.

S&S: unless I am mistaken, the stuff from Admiral is sheared from sheet/plate, according to the fine print. How was the twist on yours? What exactly did you order?

thanks again!

I've never had a twist with anything that I bought from admiral. Ordered 1075 btw.

I got 3/16 x 2 x 36" - 1095 CRA and no twist also got 1/8 x 1 x 72 in S30v with no twist

The S30v was an surprise really, my order got messed up with Admiral and while I did get my original order eventually I got someone elses order to begin with, I'm told this is not unusual from them but I'd definantly order from them again. the quality of the piece more than made up for the office bungling.

I agree - go with Aldo!

I have 1084 and 1095 from him and it's great stuff

The 1095 will take an awesome hamon if you use Satanite and quench it in Park's 50.

thanks,

it's good to hear some positive stories about Admiral.

Last week, I came across a thread full of Admiral horror stories.

Kelly Cupples has 3/16" stock, never had any trouble with his steel. Great guy, knife maker and he ships free if you buy enough.

If I were you I still would go with Aldo or Kelly. I have heard nothing but good things...and I think they are cheaper than admiral. My next order of steel will probably be to one of those guys.

SCISS0R STOCK!! is what you are looking for. I have a supplier who supplies a New England Scissor company. He would have it, but it will depend on quantity, which I'd want to speak to you about in private. Please E-mail me your Phone# and we can figure this one out. Hell, you're in Philly.I could even deliver to you.

I ordered 8 feet of 1 1/4" x 5/32" 1095. It was perfectly flat- my garage floor is perfectly level and flat, and it laid exactly square.

thanks again everyone.

S&S - thanks for the info; I was wrong - the stuff in Admiral's "blade catalog" does not indicate that it is sheared from sheet. Perhaps they are flattening it, or it really is bar.

Awwww buy it from Aldo but don't give him your phone number (tell him you use carrier pigeons or something.) :D
