I need a some wide pieces of 5160 1/4" flat. 1/4x5 would work best, but I could live with bigger. My local steel supplier can't get 5160 at all right now. Admiral Steel doesn't carry anything over 4". Anybody got a suggestion?

There is 5160 and there is 5160H. They are different as the "H" steels are melted to hardenability standards rather than just chemistry. 5160H has wider possible ranges especially Mn and Cr. For most knife uses it probably wouldn't make a difference .

I googled too. 3/8" is 50% thicker than I need. I'd hate to waste that much steel.

Oh I know, but calling and asking if other dimensions would be available is easy enough. Just because they don't catalog it doesn't always mean they can't do it.

Out of curiosity, did you call Admiral. They shear from plate in a lot of their steels. Not sure about 5160, but a call will find out.

I did. I thought the same thing, but unfortunately the 5160 they get in flat bar.
