Is there a source for full sized knife patterns out there? I wanted to find something for my first REAL project. Something with no guard on it. A hunter or skinner style would be good. Something that will fit on standard sized paper. Any thoughts? John

Get some paper and a pencil and start drawing patterns of knives that you like, or would like to have. Use your imagination and look at your favorite knives. Look at the knife and think about improvements or changes you would like to make to them.

Keep things in context with your present tools and abilities, as your skills improve move onto more complex patterns.

Knives are much like snowflakes, the shapes and patterns are limitless.

do a google search and look for LloydHardingCollection.
a ton of stuff there...

good luck

Thank you for the replies. Richard thank you for the pattern. The knife would be for me and if it turns out good then will be a keeper for life. I need to work on my drawing of knives a little more to get better at it. But I have no intrest in making knives to sell. It's just for fun for me. I'll leave that up to the pro's. Thanks again. John

John, I can tell you that I stink at drawing knives usually. Something that helped me when I was trying to draw a design is to mark dimensions first. For instance, mark a space of 4" or whatever for a handle. From the end of that mark, you can determine the dimensions of your blade. Then draw your knife in sections, adjusting as you need to for flow.

Really, when it comes down to it, I'll get an idea for a blade shape in my mind, mark the dimensions on the steel, and then start grinding. My knife design isn't finished until I'm done grinding. It matures and changes as I grind to fit my eye and my hand.

For the life of me I can not draw a Nessmuk knife but love the look of them.

I like to draw within the dimensions of the stock width too.

If no one has it. and the board/some one here can host it, i have about 80 megs of the LH collection. i think i can zip it up close to the way i got it... THIS MIGHT BE PUBLIC DOMAIN. but i dont know for sure...

bacustomknives thank you for the link. But I am making a knife for myself and needed an idea for my first knife to make. I have no intention of stealing any one's design and have no intention of ever making knives for sale now or ever. I will continue to practice on my drawings to get better. But as far as making knives go it's for me and me alone. John

I've got a cool skinner pattern I got from a friend. Can't post pics on here but check it out on ebay if you want. If you like it I can send you the pattern. Search for Luke Smith Custom Knives, and you can e-mail me at coolhandluke4@juno.com

draw your design out on light weight cardboard (12 pack beverage boxes) when you get one you like trace it onto plexiglass and cut it out with a bandsaw. this will alow you to lay it on your steel and see through it to see how it fits. especially good when working with damascus patterns.
