I recently purchased a knife with red and black carbon fiber. I really liked the stuff and am trying to find some to use myself. Does anyone know a good source? Also, does carbon fiber come in any other colors?
Carbon fiber itself is black - no choices. The resin used to make it a laminate can be coloured. If you have a fiber source near by it is not too difficult to make the laminate yourself.
I have never heard or seen any black and red carbon fiber
Are you sure it is not black and red G10,when finished correcly
G10 takes on a weave look like carbon fiber.
hmm...well if I look at the spine of the knife, and that would be the side of the carbon fiber, I can see that the red "threads" go all the way through. So I don't think its a paint.
I think that TLM is correct about the resin in this piece of CF containing the color. It appears to be visible where the resin would be a little thicker.
I have experimented with CF interleaving with color fabric using clear resin, the appearance is entirely different. See:
CF fabric is available but expensive (about $25 per sq yd)
The stuff I'm referring to was on another forum. Some makers bought the stuff advertized as 'red'CF, and it looked solid red in the photo's. It was after it was worked that it was discovered that the red was just a coating.
It was not the stuff you picture here.
It might even have been G10. The thread was about 6 months ago.
Mike is right, there is a colored CF, but as soon as you contour the handle scales the color goes away very quickly, and you would be left with black CF... As long as the scales were flat it looked okay... I didnt like the stuff myself.
