Does anyone have any sources for wood scale material in lengths longer than 5"?

Check out Ebay, you can get all kinds of wood all different sizes there.
Look under woodworking, not knife making though, you'll find a better mix and prices. I just bought a bunch of wood from an Ebay seller, West Penn Hardwoods, that offers free shipping on some of his auctions and if you buy $100 worth you get free shipping. He's a nice guy to deal with too! I bought a gob of wood, including two 8 x 8 x 2" thick blocks of cocobola wood. Beautiful stuff and I'm gonna turn it on my lathe. Only bugger for knife makers is it isn't stabilized, it's coated with wax, but for the prices, you can afford to slice it up and send it out for stabilizing. They have all kinds of wonderous woods. I bought some I've never heard of, CHICO ZAPOTE. Gonna have to read up on it to see if it's hazardous to humans!!!! :D

Try searching the internet for turning stock, or turning squares, of the type of wood you are looking for.
Woodcraft and Rockler might be a good starting place. Gilmer hardwoods might also serve your needs.

I think Cocabola is one of the oily woods like Ironwood and a few others that don't take stabilization. I just buff it and wax it.

Also luke at Luke's posting on the supplies for sale forum. He's been great working with me on sizes, and cna cut pretty much anything, depending on his stock. I'm going to be getting some hawk handle blanks in jatoba from him soon.

I'm in north central FL.

If you're ever coming to Atlanta, let me know. There is a wood store here that is the best I've ever been to. You can get whatever you want there. I've never mentioned a species they didn't have.
