Blacksmith's Depot, Centaur Forge, and Riverside Machine in Dequeen,Ark.

All three sell tongs.

If you want to hold barstock then check out www.gstongs.com. makes special tong to wrap around barstock and hold solid. One guy from down here inOklahoma has some and says they are great. Mike

Hey Jay,

Guys, thanks for the leads, I will pass them along. George, the ones Mace uses were the ones I was thinking of. They were really nicely made.

If you could only have one pair of Tom Tongs, which jaw type and handle length would you get for knife forging? I know there are different configs for what you are using at the time but looking to start somewhere...

make your own tongs? a very easy design can be found at http://anvilfire.com/iForge/ open one of the tongs tutorials and at the bottom it will show the other tong tutorials where you will find "easy tongs". they are easy to adjust to blade thickness, and have worked well for me for years. they can even be made cold. i prefer light weight tongs. just my thoughts:rolleyes::D

I have made tongs using the Anvilfire patterns.
They are easy, quick and very functional.

I can very highly recommend Tom Tongs, Off Center Forge tongs, and while I don't have any yet, I plan on getting some from gstongs. Heck, I found him on ebay and realized that he's only about 20 minutes from where I live!!!

If I could only buy ONE set of tongs, it would be the Tom Tongs in the Z box jaw configuration.... probably 1 - 1-1/4" size.

These are an OUTSTANDING design that allows you to hold a blade by the tang or blade itself, and hold it VERY VERY SECURELY!!! The off-set jaws allow you to choke up on your material far past the rivet. Typically tongs limit you in depth from the tip of the jaws to the rivet. The off-set jaw eliminates that!!!

I just bought two pairs of the Z box jaws and a pair of 3/8" bolt tongs (also Tom Tongs) and could easily do all of my work with these. (but tongs are tools. tools are cool. MUST BUY TOOLS! ;) ).

gstongs has been mentioned a couple of times. Newbie disclaimer, but if he has a pattern that someone might be interested in, I think his tongs can be considered without worry.

I've used three of Glen's tongs for about 18 mo. They work great. He seems like a good guy who takes pride in his work.

Take care, Craig

I try to at least buy American.I think the last pair of tom toms I saw had Pakistan on them.:grumpy:

I just recently ordered two sets from Glen and his him customize them for my stock dimensions.
Done in a few days and a great guy to deal with!
