Now that Jim Mattis has gone to his reward (and is sorely missed), can anyone recommend a reliable and preferably affordable online source for puukkos and other types that Chai carried?

And the sister Kellam site:
http://www.kainuunpuukko.com/english/kpline.htm

I highly recommend the "Kankaanpaa" Puukko which I received from James shortly before his untimely departure. It is available on Ragnar's site (listed above) at a very reasonable price.

I got a "Rugged Tommi" from BladeArt yesterday. More expensive, but a wonderful puukko.

A couple of other sites are:

Ragnar the Viking's site is a lot of fun to ramble through. Top-rate service, too.He responds promptly to questions. The day I ordered it, my Helle knife was on its way, 2nd-day delivery, and very securely packed. He gets my top recommendation.

I second ragweedforge.com. After a bad experience with another online vendor (discount knives) it was a pleasure to do business with Ragnar. He promptly answered
email questions with helpful advice, and the
order was filled quickly and sent second day
air.

I suspect I will be throwing money his way again in the near future!

Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then he'll be a mile away, and barefoot!

You certainly won't go wrong dealing with Ragnar - and you'll be a while until you run out of options there.
If you are into building your own - want to look at an interesting gallery or buy custom at good prices then I suggest visiting: http://www.brisa.multi.fi/start3.html

Dennis Hombacka is also a great guy to deal with.

Just want to agree with Jimbo. Dennis at BRISA is serviceminded and good to deal with.I bought handlematerial from him and it was excellent stuff he sent me.

I have a "KP" puuko. It is a superb knife. I got it it through the knifecenter that also sells Martiniis. But the best source for "KP" seems to be Kellam, and the link is above.
What exactly is the connection between Kellam and Kainuun? If you go to Kainuun through the link given in the preceding post, you'll see that it's really the Kellam site and they show the Kellam catalogue. I always thought Kellam was just the importer or distributor.

I believe that the knives produced by the Kainuun smithy are only available through Kellam (or their distributors).

I agree with you re: the quality of the KP line. My "Rugged Tommi" is one extremely sharp, high quality knife.

However, even much less expensive puukkos are terrific knives featuring great edges.

You are right. Kainuun Smithy (Kainuun Puukko), Finland, is owned by Kellam Knives Co. Kainuun Puukko is the original maker of KP-Tommi-knives. Kellam Knives imports them to the USA as Kellam Knives also imports Marttiini, Jarvenpaa, Kankaanpaa, Roselli etc. knives from Finland.
Kellam Knives has over 800 different kind of knives to distribute and sell. Visit www.kellamknives.com

If you are interested in J.Marttiini knives be sure to try Toolshop also. I think their prices are lot less than Kellams (who is really driving the prices up

Marttiinis prices start from 14.95 USD at Kellam Knives. Is that high? The knives are already in the USA!!

Kellam Knives Co. is the owner of Kainuun Puukko. Kellam Knives started it's knife business nine years ago by importing and distributing Finnish knives to North America. Little by little it has expanded business by creating its own KELLAM-brand and acquiring the knife making company, Kainuun Puukko.

Hello Jouni! One day I hope to acquire the knife named after you! It's a real beauty.
So are the KP knives still made the same traditional way? I'm sure they are. But what exactly is "silver steel"? It is incredible stuff, but sp far I haven't put its corrosion resistance to the test. How "stain resistant" is it? Can I risk using it around salt water? And when is your next sale on the Jounis [or big Pokaras]?

Welcome, Jouni.

I see my message to you and Harriet got through.

I think you'll find many fans and admirers of the puukko here and I hope you'll find it a good source of information and perhaps business.

A Kellam Forum might be a welcome addition to BladeForums. (Something to think about.)

Best,
