I was wondering, does anyone know of a source of lower than normal alloy 10xx steel? Ideally something with very little manganese? Baring this, out of the "regular" 10xx steels, which typically has the least manganese?
For the 10xxs, 1095 will have the lowest maqnganese content on average. I've heard of tamahagane having virtually no manganese, but that's not a readily available steel.
Don's W2 with .22% Mn will probably be the shallowest hardening steel you can find. 1095 spec.s call for .3% to .5%. W-1 calls for .1%-.4%, so it would also be a good choice.
