Hey all, I haven't been on here for awhile since summer is really busy for me up here. But things are calming down a bit now so I can get back to my forging. I'm trying to build up my stock of steel for the winter and am havinig some problems. Does anyone know of a steel supplier who will ship Postal service? UPS shipping to where I'm at in AK is crushingly expensive...

Thanks in advance,

Nate W.
Haines, AK

Check with Kelly Cupples. He ships some stuff to me via USPS. What you really need is steel that fits into a flat rate box. He or Aldo Bruno may be willing to cut stuff down for you.

I have sent a good bit to AK and even more to HI through the PO, Flat Rate but you'll need a press or power hammer.

Kelly or Aldo would be the way to go for flat stock.

Nate, I've been getting my steel for damascus from Kelly for years. Can't go wrong.... If you want to use some great W2 , have Don ship it to me and I will forge it down for you, then get it to Haines. That reminds me, I'm getting low on my W2. I'm
going to have to get some of Don's before he decides to keep what he's got......
You can get my number from John and Sharon.... I'll be coming to Haines sometime in the next month or so.... Let me know if you want any of my wrought iron ingots...
I'll bring some with me... dm
Kelly's email.... octihunter@charter.net phone...509-949-5231

I've never worked with W2 before. All the steel I've worked with has been oil quench, but I'm always up for trying something new ;)

D.Mirabile it's not every day I hear someone say they're coming through Haines. I didn't realize there was anybody here from my neck o' the woods :)

I've sent an email to Mr. Cupples about steel. So now we'll see I guess. Thanks for your help gentlemen.

Metalhead
Have them ship it priority mail. Cut it into the smallest size. i.e. 12'' 70 pounds is a few knives. All for 12.00. I have a friend he use the box as it comes flatten puts 15'' pieces
in it for me. Hope these are some ideas.

Oh, no water touchs W2 in my shop. Just a fast quench oil :)

Hmm, that's good to know Don, thanks. How picky is it as far as quenching temps? I'm pretty new at this and all I've ever done in the past was heat to non-magnetic and let it soak in the forge for a while before quenching... Like I said, I'm new to it and haven't gotten at all advanced with my technique. And there's not exactly an overload of bladesmiths in Haines Alaska who I can learn from. Hell, last year Chuck Richards sent me a whole box full of really nice handle materials and I haven't turned out one blade yet that I thought was worth the time and materials to even make a handle (not that I've put forward a lot of man hours to it, it's been a busy year) But I hope to have some time this winter to really knuckle down and work on getting better (keep your fingers crossed for me)

And Jim, I've been here for about 2 1/2 years, I have learned the joys of flat-rate boxes many times over, just never for steel yet. So long as kelly doesn't have anything against the post office I think I'll be all set. It's just that the big online sellers I've talked to will not ship USPS, only UPS. Damned if I can figure out why...

Nate, sent you an email,,,, It was just sent back to me! Well, just get ahold of John and Sharon Svenson, Extreme Dreams ...their number is in the book. They are up at Mud Bay... you can get my contact info there....
I've been hammering here in Juneau for close to 15 years... Adam DeRosier also lives in the area. He is at Excursion Inlet.

W2, like Don said is usually quenched in water for blades.

Oh, I didn't say that :eek:I use and recommend a fast quench oil. Water will work if you don't mind a few cracked blades. W2 is a water quench steel and water is good for thick cross sections but oil works fine for something as thin as a blade :)

Nate, the McMaster Carr fast stuff will work but Park's 50 is what I use.

ooops, my bad, sorry Don, I meant to write ,,, as Don said, W2, quench in oil... I guess that I should read what I write before I hit the post button...

getting up too early, time to nap...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I've been very pleased getting steel (a couple small orders) from Kelly Cupples.

You might also want to check in with Ray Kirk [ray@rakerknives.com]. He cuts various steels to fit in flat rate mail boxes. I've only got some of his 3/4" round 5160 and was very pleased. Some day I hope to place an order for some of his 52100. Check here for more info, http://www.rakerknives.com/Steelprices.htm.
