With all this postings here of late on exotic woods, I am curious of some of the sources that you guys have available to you.

Another curious question. What is the most unusual material you have ever used for handle material?

Gilmer Wood Co.,2211 N.W.Saint Helens Road, Portland, OR 97210 (503)274-1271; Tropical Exotic Hardwoods of Latin Americia on the net, Eisenbrand Inc. Exotic Hardwoods on the net; Waterloo Wood.com for stabilized woods; Miguel's Desert Ironwood Distribution on the net. These are a few of the sources.
I use Stabilized Woods from Waterloo Woods as well as doing some of my own stabilization myself.
NOTE: ALWAYS WEAR A MASK(RESPIRATOR) WHEN USING EXOTICS OR STABILIZED WOOD OF ANY SORT TO KEEP FROM HAVING PULMONARY PROBLEMS LATER.

Most unusual material I guess that I would have to say Russian Impalla which is actually a goat horn from Upper Mongolia. It looks like an Impalla Horn bet is solid, The center is cream to goldish yellow with a clear medium to dark brown clear outer shell, when it is polished and held in the light it is simply beautiful. I used it on a Lady's Dagger with 1/4" Nickle Silver and center cut Walrus Ivory for a finger spacer. I guess next would be Bois d'ark that came from a barn in central Texas that was 108 years old when it was torn down. Still have some of that deep hony to molassas color due to age still hard as a rock.

Bought a bunch of beyootiful wwod from a place up near Sacramento, CA. called Gallery of Woods. They recently moved, so you'd have to call 411 to get the number.

eisenbrand is good...but have had the very best success with mr gilmer in oregon...he knows what knifemakers want....puts smaller pieces away for them that are very highly figured and are too small for most furniture makers...if you have a special request i recommend you give him a call.....a few of my woodworker buddies stop by his place and bring back some fantastic stuff....
