Sources for ferrocerium?

what size are you looking for, the boy scout hot spark is a small rod, available from most boy scout outlets3 bucks, walmart sells a doan tool knockoff 6 bucks, be sure to glue the rod in place as some have come loose when dropped.

the larger the rod the more sparks it throws,
for 12 bucks you can get a NRA survival kit that includes a blast match which has a pretty large rod, the gerber strike force is a pretty large rod with a case and striker, the case holds some wet fire tinder also but is a little bulky.

then the swedish fire steels as noted above also have a large rod which throws a lot fo spark.

so what are you looking for?

FYI :D The Strike force is made by Ultimate Survival (Survival Inc) that also make the Blastmatch. The rod appears to be the same one as in the Blastmatch. If you were to break the Blastmatch its easy to pull the rod out of the case and use it in a conventional way.

Thanks for the response guys. I am looking for raw sections. I have a couple us survival ones. I am looking to embed a rod in a kydex sheath.

ron hood sells some smaller ones on his site, and you could take one out of a doan tool if that is the size you are looking for. fyi the strike force that i have been carrying for 10 years says gerber on it.

Well I never! :D Sorry, didnt want to sound like a pompous ass, I thought you had mixed up some names.

Not sure how easy it is to deal with this outfit...Try these:

Big Flint: 3/8 Inch Around By 4 Inches Long, Weighs 3 Ounces

I will say, the EPCamps posted by Akabu is larger and costs less though...4" long, 1/2" diameter flint stick with lanyard cap. But, this should give you some options in sizes.

I was wondering if someone can provide names and if possible web links to quality Magnesium bar/flint attached fire starters? I have one. It was cheap. I am looking for one that the flint will NOT break off/come loose?

On another note, I tried real hard to obtain products from: buckshotscamp.com

They have a good number of reasonable appearing products. Alas, they failed to reply to my numerous phone calls and emails! I don't know if they are even in business anymore or just a pretty website!:grumpy:

ls,
i think you are looking for the original doan tool, as they seem to hold their ferro rod better than the others, the cost is about 6 bucks or so. i think cabela's sells them as well as campmor and quite a few others. the rod is still dislodgeable, so i would still put some epoxy on them . doan made the originals for the air force, and is still in business in cleveland ohio.

i tend to use jb weld for most things like this, but any clear epoxy will work, i would imagine that even the 5 minut stuff would hold on to the rod well.

Hey Glocker...

How are you embedding a Ferro rod into a sheath ??

I use Magfire rods from www.magfireusa.com,, awesome rods..
I also make a Magfire holder which attaches to the side of the sheath..

They can be had with one of my sheaths or a stand alone kit that you can attach to almost anything including most of my existing sheaths...(Steel pictured isn't a Magfire Steel)

Sheath on right is mine,,left Allan Blade design..
