Sources for HF 1x30 belts?

Sharpening Post of the Year Award goes to you sir! And you get bonus points for being a fellow engineer;) Thanks man, this could turn out to be quite useful to me one day. Now...to purchase a belt grinder...

Thank you! :o Yeah, the engineer in me comes out a bit in posts like that. ;) On a recommendation, I also posted a new thread in M, T, & E for greater overall view for the rest of the forum.

Not a problem at all man...detail is excellent in my opinion. Yea I went and saw that thread after this one and was pleased yet again. A HF 1x30 for $30?? I just might have to check that out sooner than later!

Yeah, if you can find a 25% off coupon and get it on sale too, you can get it for close to $30. Easily had for $40 though. A few starter belts for around the same price, or a full set for about $90. Worth the price of entry IMO.

I'll say...so quick question, hope it isn't dumb.....when you use the leather stropping belt...do you hold the edge toward the belt like you would while you normally sharpen? Or do you point the edge in the direction of the belt motion like you would if you were hand stropping?

Definitely edge trailing. Otherwise you end up with this

^ the result of not noticing that I'd accidentally flipped my reverse switch before stropping. When the belt is moving its kind of hard to see for certain which way it is traveling. Oops.

Yep, what he^^^ said. Ouch! :( A really sharp edge will bite into that leather belt so fast, you won't realize what happened until it's over.

I was pretty happy that I didn't end up with a HACK shaped implant in my liver. Just a ding in the concrete and the edge, and a nice shot of adrenaline to remind me to always check the direction first.

Oh dang!!! That'll definitely make you think twice! Glad you didn't get hurt!

awesme post!
i've been meaning to make an order to TruGrit and you just gave me a great start point.
One question about the Scotch-brite belts, can you specify more on what modifications I need to do other than removing the table?

I like to rest my hands on the table, so I didn't remove it, but I did have to clear the area around where the belt passes through. If you didn't already, you'd also have to remove the black plastic side guard, remove the clear plastic top guard, and then carefully bend the upper part of the machine to create enough clearance for the belts to pass.

Even with all of that, every ScotchBrite belt that I've tried has been a bit on the small side, so they're really tight on the wheels, to the point that the motor will not start when switched on without a little assistance by hand.

Once they're running they work just fine, but you definitely want to be wearing PPE (as you should be anyway... ;)) as these belts shed a lot of crap that would otherwise get in yours eyes and nose.
