Would anyone be willing to share your favorite sources for the simple carbon steels (5160, 1084, 1095)?
By favorite I mean good prices, nice variety of thicknesses, widths and lengths.
Sounds like one of the best sources for 5160 forging stock is Dan Gray
I know the big steel suppliers have them, but just wanted to ask if there was a favorite little guy you like.
I am just doing stock removal right now (and barely at that, with family and farm and work responsibilities) so like to get my steel in 36 lengths and about 10 or 12 widths. Precision ground is not necessary.
I have only used 01 in the past, but have a few designs I want to try out (some choppers, too), so want something inexpensive, easy to work with and heat treat with my simple oxy torch, veg oil quench, modified toaster-oven tempering setup.
Thought I would try some of the simpler steels.
(I apologize if this has been posted and answered 25 times already and I just could not find it; please just point me in the right direction)
Thanks much,
Brome
